Kya is a posthumous character in the animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
She is the wife of Hakoda and the previously unnamed mother of Katara and Sokka who was killed during a raid initiated by the Fire Nation during the Hundred Year War.
Her second-born grandchild and only granddaughter was named after her.

Kya's death motivated Hakoda to join the other water tribes in the war with the Fire Nation in what would be known as the 100 Year War. Katara never forgave the Fire Nation for her mother's murder nor Yon Rha.

Kya was kind and brave and protective of her children.
Appearance[]
Kya was a woman with dark brown hair, blue eyes and light brown skin. Her mother-in-law Kanna gave the necklace to Hakoda to give to Kya, who passed it down to her daughter, which Katara wore as a memento of her mother. Her daughter and only granddaughter resembled her.

- Kya was originally going to be Katara's name, but the creators couldn't hold the rights of Katara being named so because another character was called Kya. She was able to be called Kya in Season 3.
