Kryptonite is a fictional element featured in the Superman series published by the American publishing company DC Comics. It is a radioactive rock born from Krypton's remains and has somehow ended up on Earth.

It first appeared on radio in The Adventures of Superman (June 1943) before making its comic debut in Superman #61 (November 1949)

History[]

The term is a combination of the words "Krypton" and "Meteorite."

Kryptonite is a radioactive meteor rock that were remains of Krypton after its destruction; because of this, it is one of the Kryptonians' greatest weaknesses. Most rocks have been spread throughout Earth, which is why it is Superman's "Achilles' heel". Batman, Lex Luthor, Metallo, and Titano are four notable characters often presented as using kryptonite. Batman has a supply of Kryptonite on Clark's request if he was ever compromised. Meanwhile, Metallo, Lex and Titano need it to defeat Superman in combat. However, the kryptonite radiation could only be counteracted if contained in anything lined with lead, such as Clark Kent's and Kara Zor-El's Superman and Supergirl suits. Additionally, in Supergirl, Lena created an anti-Kryptonite suit for Kara, presumably lined with lead as well.

Depending on the color, they have different effects on both Superman and Supergirl.
