- “Kreacher is what he has been made by wizards, Harry. Yes, he is to be pitied. His existence has been as miserable as your friend Dobby's. He was forced to do Sirius's bidding, because Sirius was the last of the family to which he was enslaved, but he felt no true loyalty to him. And whatever Kreacher's faults, it must be admitted that Sirius did nothing to make Kreacher's lot easier”
- ―Albus Dumbledore on Kreacher
Kreacher is a house elf who was servant to the House of Black and a recurring character in the Harry Potter franchise. He later served Harry Potter after Harry, Hermione and Ron treated Kreacher with kindness.
Background[]
He favored Regulus Black, the most kind and pleasant of the Blacks to him. When he joined the Death Eaters, Regulus volunteered Kreacher to accompany Voldemort to the Crystal Cave and forced Kreacher to drink teh potion where Salazar Slytherin's locket was to make it into a Horcrux. However, Kreacher suffered from drinking the potion, causing him to have intense stomach pains, become dehydrated, and develop nightmare allusions. Voldemort left Kreacher to suffer; however the house elf was able to escape. Being able to survive, Kreacher told Regulus what happened, causing the young Death Eater to be furious with his Master. He ordered Kreacher to take him back to the cave. Regulus ordered Kreacher to switch Slytherin's Locket with a fake one and to go home to destroy the real locket and to never tell his family what happened to him, causing Kreacher to leave Regulus to die in the cave.
Kreacher despaired, but never dared to defile his master's orders, so he left and never told the rest of the Blacks the real fate of Regulus. However, back at home Kreacher was unable to destroy the locket, despite his many attempts. This inability to complete an order of his master may have driven him to insanity, explaining his muttering and devotion to his mistress' painting.
