Kosmoceratops is an extinct genus of chasmosaurine ceratopsian dinosaur that lived in Utah, United States during the Late Cretaceous period. It is known to have 10 more horns on the top of its frill. It is featured in media such as Jurassic Park, Dino Dan and Dinosaur Train, to name a few.

In Real life[]

Home[]

The Kosmoceratops lived during the Late Cretaceous period (late Campanian) in the part of the island continent Laramidia that is now Utah, United States. Its fossils have been recovered from the Kaiparowits Formation in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, living with Deinosuchus, Nasutoceratops, Parasaurolophus, Troodon, and Teratophoneus.

Discovery[]

It was discovered during the 2007 Kaiparowits Base Project.  It was referred to as a Kaparowits' new taxon.

In 2010, Scott D. Sampson named the creature after combining "Kosmos" meaning ornated and "ceratops." Its species name K. Richardsoni was named after him.

Physical Description[]

The Kosmoceratops measures approximately 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length and has a mass of around 1.2 metric tons (1.3 short tons). This species is characterized as a quadrupedal organism. Notably, it features elongated rows of primary teeth. Its nasal structure exhibits distinct differences when compared to other ceratopsids. The Kosmoceratops is recognized for having the most elaborately decorated skull among its relatives, which includes a singular nasal horn and two postorbital horn cores, among other features. Additionally, the narial strut of the premaxilla is oriented in a backward inclination, and the nasal horncore presents unique characteristics that set it apart from other members of the chasmosaurine group.
