Koh the Face Stealer is a minor antagonist in Netflix's 2024 fantasy adventure series, Avatar: The Last Airbender , based on the 2005-2008 Nickelodeon series of the same name. He traps his victims the Fog of Lost Souls before feeding on them. People must show no emotion to him or he will have the opportunity to steal their face.

History[]

Background[]

Many years ago Koh the Face Stealer was born to The Mother of Faces. He often stole the faces of others and trapped his prey in the Fog of Lost Souls by tapping them in their worst memories.

At some point, he took the face of Ummi, a woman that Avatar Kuruk loved in retaliation for him ignoring his duties as the Avatar in the human world. Kuruk attempted to kill Koh with his special embued knife capable of killing spirits, but the Face Stealer stopped him. His pendant depicting his mother was stolen from him by Avatar Roku. Since these two instances, Koh became a malicious spirit within the Spirit World and become the Avatars' deadly enemy.

Avatar; The Last Airbender[]

1x06 Koh meets Aang

In the sixth episode, kidnaps Sokka, Katara and the entire Earth village, trapping them in the Fog of Lost Souls, paralyzing them in despair and doubt. He traps Katara in the memory of the day the Fire Nation attacked the South Waterbending Tribe and Sokka in the memory of his father sharing self doubt that his son could be handled with leadership. He later encounters Aang and demands that he returns what he stole from him. Aang later encounters his father figure Gyatso in the Spirit World, where his mentor tells him that Koh is angry towards the avatars because Roku stole his mother's pendant from him.

Aang travels to Roku's Temple in the Fire Nation, where he consults with Roku's spirit. Though reluctant that first, Roku shows Koh's pendant to Aang, explaining that the totem is Koh's mother, the Mother of Faces. However as soon as Aang finds it on the shelf, he is soon captured by June and handed over to Zuko and Iroh and later taken into Zhao"s custody. However Zuko (as the Blue Spirit) helps Aang escape, only for his intention to capture Aang again. However, the young man escapes and returns the Pendant to Koh. In gratitude, Koh releases Katara, Sokka and the missing villagers

Trivia[]

  • Koh the Face Stealer is more antagonistic towards Aang and Team Avatar. While they briefly interacted when Aang met him, in the show Koh has a slightly expanded role. He kidnaps Sokka, Katara and the entire Earth village, trapping them in the Fog of Lost Souls, paralyzing them in despair and doubt. However, he is more lenient and allows the team to go free when Aang returns his mother’s totem to him.
