Koh the Face Stealer is a minor antagonist in the 2005-2008 Nickelodeon Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is voiced by Erik Dellums who also voiced Aaravos in The Dragon Prince.
Biography[]
Past[]
Many years ago, Koh the Face Stealer was born to the Mother of Faces. Koh was feared by everyone because of his ability to steal their faces if they showed emotion. According to Roku, Koh is old enough to know what form the Moon and Ocean Spirits took in the material world. Because of Avatar Yangchen's extremely successful tenure as Avatar which resulted in multi-generational peace, Kuruk did not have to do any work as her successor, leading to his casual life and arrogant attitude. Koh took the face of Ummi, a woman that Avatar Kuruk loved in retaliation for Avatar developing an arrogant personality. When he eventually met the spirit, he could not go through with it as Kuruk realized that killing Koh would also destroy the love of his life. He held no personal grudge against other Avatars, as they were different incarnations.
Avatar: The Last Airbender[]
Book One: Water[]
Avatar Aang enters the spirit world to seek information for Tui and La so he can save the Waterbenders from destruction. He encounters Roku's spirit who tells Aang to seek out Koh the face sealer but cautions him never to show face or emotion in front of him because Koh could steal his face. Koh plays a cat-and-mouse game with Aang, telling the Avatar for trying to kill him in the past.
The Avatar asks why he tried to kill Koh in the past. The spirit responds that it was "something about stealing the face of someone [Kuruk] loved". However, none of this matters to Koh because the Avatar is a different person now. Aang, who struggles to remain expressionless, inquired about the moon and ocean spirits who took on a mortal form so they could enter the material world. Koh would not provide a clear answer and merely stated that they were opposites, forever revolving.
Aang realizes that he is referring to the two koi fish that Aang saw swimming in the pool inside the Spirit Oasis. In his excitement, Aang showcases his epiphany but quickly switches to a stern One as Koh turns around. Before Aang left, Koh stated they would meet again.
Avatar: Escape the Spirit World[]
After Aang was brutally struck by Azula's lightning during the coup of Ba Sing Se, Koh attempted to steal Aang's face once again, but ultimately failed when Katara brought him back to life with spirit water.
Afterwards, he neither met Aang again in his current life nor his later one as Korra.
