Knuckles the Echidna is one of the two tritagonists of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series and the titular main protagonist of the Paramount Plus series at the same name.
He is a young, male Echidna who is the last surviving member of the Knuckles Clan, a member of the Team Sonic and a former rival turned friend of Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles Prower. He initially sides with Dr. Eggman but learns that he doesn't care about him when he abandoned Knuckles, leaving him there to die. However, Knuckles reformed and joined the Wachowski family in the final showdown between Dr. Eggman and Team Sonic. They later founded a new clan, where they would each protect the Master Emerald..
Knuckles was voiced by Idris Elba, who also played Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Chief Bogo in Zootopia. He is based on the character of the same name.

Knuckles was born into an unknown Echidna Tribe to an unnamed father. Their clan had been at war with the mysterious Owl Clan over the control of the Master Emerald.
On the day that Sonic fled Earth, Knuckles said farewell to his father, who hunted down and planted to capture Sonic for his powers and the hedgehog's adoptive mother, Longclaw, for their search for Master Emerald's whereabouts. Unfortunately, his father, clan mates and Longclaw all perished in battle. This left Knuckles alone, orphaned and resentful. Without his tribe, Knuckles became the last surviving member of the Echidna Tribe.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Prequel[]
With Longclaw's death, Knuckles sought Sonic out, who was the "key" to finding the Master Emerald. However, as he scoured the universe, Knuckles was attacked by unknown, mysterious scavengers until he recruited them in his mission to find Sonic. Meanwhile, Knuckles' scavengers tracked down Tails, who was also looking for Sonic. As the scavengers targeted Tails, Knuckles reprimanded them and told them that they were tracking the wrong person. He said there was other places that Sonic could be hiding. Little did he know, Sonic was already living on Earth during Knuckles' search, where he was eventually adopted by the Wachowski family.

Knuckles wants to fight Unit in order to defend Maddie's honor after he destroyed Maddie's library books. It is also implied that Tom and Maddie also adopted Knuckles and Tails due to one of them being a book on how to be a parent to adopted children.
