King Julien XIII (simply known as King Julien) is one of the main protagonists of the Madagascar franchise, first appearing in the 2005 film. He appears as a supporting character in the sequels Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, the deuteragonist of The Penguins of Madagascar series and the titular main protagonist of All Hail King Julien! and the miniseries All Hail King Julien: Exiled!.
He is the best friend of Maurice, the boyfriend of Sonya, and the self-proclaimed King of the Lemurs and Madagascar. Julien's uncle (also named Julien) abdicated the throne in fear of a prophecy coming true that spoke of the King of Madagascar being eaten by the Fossa. After meeting the zoo animals, King Julien decides to travel with them. However, along the way, he finds love with Sonya, renouncing his title to be with her.
Background[]
In the films, Julien (along with Mort and Maurice) join Alex, Melman, Marty and Gloria on their adventure back to New York. In the third film, Julien enters a relationship with a female bear named Sonya and remains with Circus Zaragoza, choosing to abandon his title for her.
In The Penguins of Madagascar television series, Julien has an on-and-off friendship with Skipper, sometimes acting as a rival or a frenemy.

Early Life[]
Julien comes from a long line of lemur kings.
As a baby when his parents were sleeping, a baby prince Julien found an abandoned Aye-Aye lemur child who was eventually named Maurice. Both of them were raised together and have been friends since childhood.
Julien was once best friends with a lemur named Rob McTodd, but Julien's uncle banished his former best friend a long time ago after Rob went to far and gave King Julien XII a heart attack at his birthday party.
Hail King Julien[]
He became the king of the lemurs in Madagascar after his uncle vacated his role as the King in order to avoid a prophecy of the King of the lemurs being eaten. Julien proves to be a worthy leader after he danced and defeated the fossas. It also started Mort's obsession with feet, as he used them to kick some of the fossas in the jaw.
