The only way I could feel warm, the only way to melt the ice in my veins... was to kill.
~ Killer Frost

Killer Frost is a fictional supervillain from DC Comics, frequently one of the archenemies of the hero Firestorm. The first Killer Frost was Crystal Frost, who was succeeded by her best friend Dr. Louise Lincoln after the former's death. Caitlin Snow is the current Killer Frost, but has reduced her identity to Frost once she became a heroine.

Killer Frost was created by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom, first appearing in Firestorm #3.

History[]

Crystal Frost[]

Killer Frost 01 Crystal Frost

(First Appearance) Firestorm #3 (June 1978)

In the pre-Crisis stories, Crystal Frost is the first incarnation of Killer Frost. She was a cryokinetic scientist with a grudge against Martin Stein, because she had an unrequited crush on her professor who immediately turned her down. This made her an enemy of Firestorm, who she frequently attacked. As a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains, Killer Frost fought up against the Justice League of America. She was eventually imprisoned in a cell made specifically for her, in a cell below zero so she couldn't absorb heat. That combined with the process that actually transformed her into Killer Frost was now slowly killing her.

One night, a malfunctioning power transformer at the prison allowed Frost the chance to escape. She killed the warden and took off in search of Martin Stein. She eventually tracked Stein down at a subway station in Manhattan and attacked him but Stein turned into Firestorm and got away

Eventually, Crystal went to her best friend Louise Lincoln. She soon realized that her powers were slowly killing her, giving her days, maybe hours to live. On the brink of insanity, Crystal began attacking the innocent civilians of Gotham City. When Firestorm got to them, he was surprised to see that Frost had suddenly aged rapidly from her illness. He realized that the only way to save Frost's life was to let her completely absorb the nuclear heat from his body. Killer Frost kissed Firestorm and a corona of nuclear energy burst forward from both of them. Seconds later, Killer Frost was gone – consumed by the atomic conflagration.

She has been identified as one of the deceased villains entombed below the Hall of Justice. Her body was reanimated as a Black Lantern.

Louise Lincoln[]

Louise Lincoln

(First Appearance)

  • Firestorm (vol. 2) #21 (March 1984) (as Louise Lincoln)
  • Firestorm (vol. 2) #34 (April 1985) (as Killer Frost)

Blaming Firestorm for her friend and mentor's death, Louise Lincoln repeated the same experiments that turned Crystal into the new Killer Frost. She also used her powers in her own vendetta against Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein. She sold her soul to Neron for more power. She also served as a member of the Injustice League, Secret Society of Super Villains, Suicide Squad, Legion of Doom.

Killer Frost attacked Hawaii, freezing part of the islands before being stopped by Superboy and Knockout, tried to have Lois Lane killed by pretending to save her when a monster put a hit on her and tying her to the train track until Superman saved her.

In the Superman/Batman "Public Enemies" arc, Killer Frost was one of many supervillains seeking to earn a $1 billion reward offered by President Lex Luthor to sanction Superman and Batman.

In DC Universe #0, she was seen as a member of Libra's Secret Society of Super Villains. She is later seen as one of the villains sent to retrieve the Get Out of Hell Free card from the Secret Six,

Caitlin Snow[]

Justice League of America Killer Frost Rebirth Vol 1 1 Textless Variant

(First Appearance)

  • Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #19 (June 2013) (as Caitlin Snow)
  • Justice League of America (vol. 3) #7.2 (November 2013) (as Killer Frost)

Personality[]

Powers and abilities[]

All versions have shown the ability to absorb heat from external sources and transmute it into waves of cold. Using these powers, Killer Frost can create an ice-sheen across her entire body that grants her increased durability, cause intense blizzards that can instantly freeze the target and generate objects composed completely of ice, such as projectiles in the form of ice shards and defensive walls or shields. She can also instantly freeze animate matter through physical contact and is unable to touch a normal person without freezing them. However, if someone has a power or ability that negates the natural waves of freezing cold that come from her body, she can touch them without anything happening, as seen when she kisses Firestorm.
