Kate is the Veterinarian at the local zoo, where she is first seen taking care of an animal, Tony before meeting Griffin Keynes, a Zookeeper who is trying to get his girlfriend Stephanie back. Successfully manages to catch Joe; however, Griffin fails to leap into the lion enclosure, thereby thwarting the animals' scheme. Joe's companion Janet (Cher) advises Griffin that the most effective way to attract a female is to be seen in the company of another female, prompting Griffin to invite Kate to accompany him to Dave and Robin's wedding. At the wedding, Griffin and Kate appear to enjoy each other's company. Griffin gains the courage to confront Gale, which captures Stephanie's interest. After Kate expresses to Griffin that she had a wonderful time with him, Stephanie extends an invitation to Griffin for dinner. Griffin agrees, and they proceed to dinner followed by a fashion show. During the show, Stephanie informs Griffin that his position at the zoo is hindering his potential, leading Griffin to make the decision to resign from his job and accept Dave's offer, much to Kate's dismay.
Bernie is also disappointed and tells Griffin that he had hoped to trust someone again, but was let down when Griffin left his position.
In light of these events, Kate resolves to depart from the zoo and accepts a position in Nairobi. Meanwhile, Griffin excels as the top employee at the car dealership, yet he finds himself longing for his time at the zoo. Stephanie proposes to Griffin, but he declines her offer and ends their relationship. Subsequently, he returns to the zoo to apologize to Bernie, who welcomes Griffin's friendship once more. The animals then inform Griffin that Kate is on her way to the airport. Griffin sets out to prevent her departure, making a brief detour to confront Shane first. With Bernie's assistance, Griffin successfully catches up with Kate on the bridge and confesses his love for her. Six months later, both Griffin and Kate are back at the zoo, and Bernie has moved into a new enclosure that offers him a splendid view of the city.
