“ | It's about more than just helping Aang. Ever since he came into our lives, things have changed for me. Before I met him, I couldn't bend enough water to fill a thimble. And now look what I can do! And that's after a single day! Look around. Look where we are now. I don't know about you, but I can't go back. | „ |
~ Katara to Sokka about her water bending improvements since Aang |
Katara is one of the two deuteragonists and the main female protagonist of Netflix's 2024 live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
She is Sokka's younger sister, Gram-Gram's only granddaughter and the daughter of Hakoda and Kya as well as the last Waterbender from her tribe.
Background[]
Katara was born to Hakoda and Kya fourteen years prior to the series. During a Fire Nation raid, Katara and Sokka were left motherless after a soldier from the Fire Nation murdered their mother right in front of her.
Many years later, she and her brother find and free Aang, the last Airbender and the current Avatar from a frozen Iceberg.
Personality[]
Unlike her older brother, Katara is optimistic, friendly and brave; while both of them are fierce and protective, Sokka and Katara often clash due to their contrasting personality. Like her brother, Katara believes that Aang is the one hope who can help defeat the Fire Nation and restore hope back to the world. As such, she joins Aang on his quest in stopping the militaristic Fire Nation and has her own self discovery while forming a strong and close bond with Aang as the series progresses.
Due to Katara's kindness and optimism, she is able to influence several people with her kind personality, especially her brother. By the time of "Legends," Pakku notices that Katara is an excellent waterbender and even appoints her as Aang's new waterbending teacher. While Katara is still The Heart of the team and a gentle, caring soul, she's far less motherly towards Sokka and Aang than she was in the cartoon. Unlike her cartoon counterpart, Katara lacks her hot-temper, but she does get easily frustrated with Sokka when he doesn't believe her and they are prone to fighting in the first season. She is also fiercely protective of her brother and Aang, even proving to be a formidable warrior against Zuko until Zhao killed the Moon Spirit, Tui

Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Katara used to have minimal training in waterbending due to having to hide her abilities because if anyone found out, she would be killed. By the Siege of the North, she was able to matter waterbending and successfully held her own against Prince Zuko until General Zhao killed the Moon Spirit and she temporarily lost her waterbending powers. However her waterbending returned when Princess Yue sacrifice her own life by returning the portion of the moon spirit's essence and thus reviving the spirit and restoring the moon. By the end of the first season, Katara has everything she needs to know about waterbending and takes it upon herself to become Aang's waterbending master.
Katara learned how to bend water into ice. After seeing how Earthbenders used the Earth to throw rock disks, Katara used waterbending skills and hurled ice disks at her enemies. She can also trap her enemies by using Icebending to trap Prince Zuko in an ice casing.
