Johnny Cade is the deuteragonist of the 1967 novel The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. He is the best friend of the novel's protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis and comes from an abusive family, seeing the Greasers as his own family instead. In the novel he killed the leader, Bob Sheldon in self-defense when he and he fellow Socs tried to drown Ponyboy in a nearby fountain. This caused the two to run away and become fugitives of the law.
