Trader Johann is the overall main antagonist of Dragons: Race to the Edge. While it appeared he was an ally to the dragon riders, he was actually trying to kill them all these years while hoping to obtain "the King of All Dragons." However, his efforts to rid the dragon riders led to his downfall when Johann was frozen and killed by the Berserker Bewilderbeast which also saved Hiccup's life.

Season 5[]
In "Sins of the Past", Johann works together with Snotlout and Heather to get the Dragon lenses, but they failed, and now the lenses in Krogan's hands. In the end, Johann is revealed to be working with the Dragon Hunters, and in the tent, he confronts Krogan and Viggo Grimborn, explaining his true motives: infiltration into the Berk world, years of building trust, acting like he was some kind of "buffoonish fop", kissing the boots of Stoick the Vast and Hiccup Haddock, just to achieve his goal: King of Dragons.
Season 6[]
In "In Plain Sight", Johann is furious to learn that the King of Dragons is nowhere to be seen in the lenses, until he learns from Viggo that Hiccup is going to be his key to obtain lenses. He once again retains his facade, assisting Hiccup in obtaining the topaz and sapphire for lenses. During their journey, Tuffnut and Ruffnut believe that there is a spy in their group so they begin to attack each other to prove, which one is spy, and this concerns Johann, who believes that sooner or later they will learn his true nature (while Hiccup was off about spy in their team). As Hiccup and Johann journey the cave of Sandbuster, they find the gems they need, but before they leave, Johann reveals his true nature to Hiccup, who was shocked by his betrayal. When Hiccup attempts to reason with Johann asking how much Krogan and Viggo are paying him, Johann reveals that he is the ringmaster, and that means that he pays them, and is revealed to be the real employer of the Dragon Hunters. When Johann begins to vent his frustration by how he is exasperatingly tired of kissing their boots, he notices Hiccup's lack of surprise and asks why. Hiccup explains that the twins were the reason that Hiccup learned that Johann was a spy, since he's revealed to be the one, who instigated all the events of all of the episodes and adventures they have endured (like witnessing Heather losing her lens to Krogan; distress calling Dragon Riders to help him with some rogue dragons, while the Dragon Hunters attack the edge; the time when Johann reveals Heather's whereabouts when she went after Dagur; and his ship was conveniently docked at the Outcast Island, right as Dagur broke out of prison). Feeling betrayed by Johann, Hiccup and Toothless were able to escape Johann's wrath and head to the Edge to explain the team of Johann's betrayal.
In "No Bark, All Bite", Stoick was furious to learn about Johann's betrayal, so he unintentionally endangers his home by destroying and throwing away all of the food products from Johann's last shipment (much to his son's chargin).
In "Tripple Cross", Johann and Krogan decide to betray Viggo, but the latter manages to escape and asks Hiccup for his help. Viggo lies to them that he kidnapped Hiccup, and Krogan decided to get rid of Hiccup, but Viggo refuses. Enraged, Johann and Krogan confront Viggo for his traitorous actions, asking why Viggo wants Hiccup alive, because he burned his face, killed his older brother, decimated his empire and humiliated him defeat after defeat. Pinning Viggo to the wall and threatening him with his dagger, Johann tells Viggo that he can smell the betrayal coming from a mile away and he patiently wasted years of building trust that he won't be outsmarted by Viggo, but then Viggo pushes Johann away and explodes the cave with his sword. Viggo sacrifices himself to buy Hiccup and Toothless time to escape and he got himself killed. Johann has Hiccup and Toothless captured, but to his dismay, Tuffnut, Ruffnut, Barf and Belch appear and rescue them and all what Johann can do is to watch them flying back to the Edge.
In "The King of Dragons", Johann, Krogan and Dragon Hunters found the location of the king of dragons, and Johann was completely shocked upon seeing the size of the King of Dragons, who's very large Bewilderbeast, and Johann remarks that they're gonna need a bigger cage, but the King awakens and kills some of Dragon Hunters by freezing them, leaving Johann and Krogan alone to find the other way on their own. As they came across the caverns, Johann and Krogan found Hiccup and the egg of King of Dragons (who's revealed to be the queen, because she laid an egg). Johann attacks Hiccup, savagely beating him up, and when he's about to give him a finishing blow by stabbing him with his dagger, Hiccup punches him away and eventually ended up on the very cliff, hanging for his life and with egg in his hands. As Hiccup nearly reached the top, Johann takes the egg, and when he prepares to finish off Hiccup with his spear, Toothless shoots plasma blast at him, causing him to lose grip of the egg, which scatters to Krogan, who snatches it and runs off, leaving Johann on his own to deal with the Night Fury. Hiccup assures Toothless that he'll deal with Johann, while Toothless goes after the egg. With Toothless gone, an infuriated Johann kicks Hiccup to the cliff, furiously asking for what. When Hiccup attempts to reason with him and Johann ignoring his pleas, and when he attempts to finish him off, King of Dragons reappears and shoots at Johann with his freezing blast, killing him. When Toothless saves Hiccup, the latter notices Johann's frozen body, and looks down in sadness and shame, feeling remorseful for not being able to save him, but Toothless comforts him.
