Joseph "Joe" West is one of the main protagonists of the CW series The Flash and appears in several crossovers involving its sister seres: Arrow, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. He is a former detective and former Captain of the Central City Police Department and a member of Team Flash. He is also the father of Iris, Wally and Jenna West, the future husband and fiance of Cecile Horton, adoptive father/father-in-law of Barry Allen and the maternal grandfather of Nora and Bart West-Allen.
Joe West aspired to being a detective like his father, Ben West and eventually became a police officer. He was also fond of his grandmother's, Esther's alcoholic egg nog.
Marriage to Francine[]
Joe married to Francine West and had a daughter with her, Iris. However, during one of his patrols, Joe and his partner recieved a 9-1-1 call from a little girl who reported her mother was unconscious and not waking up. The little girl Joe recognized was his daughter, Iris and noticed that his wife had overdosed on drugs. Afterwards, Joe tried getting Francine help in rehab. However, Francine abandoned her family while pregnant with their second child. Of course, Joe never told Iris the truth of what happened, choosing to protect his daughter and wanted her to remember Francine as the mother Joe thought his daughter deserved. However he was unaware of his son's existence until his later adulthood.
Adopting Barry[]
At some point, Joe later met and befriended Nora and Henry Allen, becoming close friends with them. All three parents realized that Barry was in love with Iris before their children even did.
Joe was present at the crime scene when he recognized the victim at Nora, who was murdered by the the Reverse-Flash/Eobard Thawne and Henry Allen was blamed/convicted of his wife's murder. Finding Barry next to his mother's lifeless body, Joe comforted him and presumably took him away from the crime scene. Like everyone else, Joe dismissed Barry's ideas that of a man in lightning (not his father Henry) murdering his mother and that he was covering what he saw to cope with Nora's death. Despite the tough childhood Barry faced, Joe decided to raise him alongside Iris and came to see Barry as if he was one of his own.
Personality[]
“You shouldn't have to. You should be able to have our baby just like any other parent, in a hospital, in a regular bed, not with all this. Hey, look what you've done to our friend, my son, my daughter, the love of my life, everybody in this damn city. How could you ever think that this would be better for humanity?”
―Joe West snapping at Marlize DeVoe
Joe West is a police officer like no other, both a detective and a father, at best.Like his future girlfriend, Cecile, Joe has to see it to believe it. He had a hard time coming to terms with Barry's claims that a man in lightning murdered his mother. Joe firmly believes Henry killed Nora. However, when he saw Barry performing as the Flash, Joe realized his stepson was right along and believed Henry to being innocent. Since learning about the existence of metahumans, Joe is barely surprised at new ideas. However, the thought of time traveling and the Multiverse is a confusing topic for Joe, despite being a cop.
Despite his best intentions, Joe is still a flawed man who does everything to keep his children safe, which is why he lied to Iris about her mother and initially kept her in the dark that Barry was the Flash. He also kept the secret that Barry fancied Iris, reasoning it wasn't in his place to tell her. Barry had romantic feelings for her. another example as that he didn't want Barry to rush in and risk his life as a vigilante, something Caitlin agreed with. After taking with Eobard Thawne (in Wells' form), Joe was convinced that he was only making Barry doubt himself. Afterwards, Joe has remained supportive of Barry's career as the Flash and always lends an ear to Iris when she is writing. When Cecile was pregnant with his fourth child, Joe was shocked and nervous but gained confidence in raising Jenna after his experiences with Barry, Iris and Wally.
Team Flash has become something of a surrogate family, with Joe having fondness for both Cisco and Caitlin. He values Caitlin's medical knowledge, even accepting her apology when she apologized for her actions against him and Cecile in Session 3. Instead of being angry, he hugged her like a father reconciling with his daughter. He also often chuckled when affected by Cisco's humor, such as Joe laughing whenever the younger man makes a snide remark or makes a cultural reference. He also acts something of a fatherly figure for Allegra Garcia.
