James Francis Ryan is the titular overarching protagonist of Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed 1998 epic war film, Saving Private Ryan.
He is a young private in the US Army during World War II and a young man from Iowa
He is portrayed by Matt Damon as a young man and then Harrison Young as an elderly gentleman.

James Ryan was born approx 1926 as the youngest of four sons. He lived in Iowa with his mother Margaret and his three brothers; Daniel, Peter and Sean.
World War II[]
Served in the 101st Airborne Division, he was assigned to go under the command of Captain Jennings. Captain Jennings was later ordered to defend Ramelle from an expected German attack led by Major Hoess.
Later life[]
In 1945, the war was officially over, but Ryan was still haunted by the sacrifices of all the soldiers made by Saving his life. He was presumably reunited with Margaret who died sometime after the War ended. Ryan eventually married an unnamed woman, having children and grandchildren.
As an old man, the Ryan family travelled to Normandy to visit the graves of the fallen soldiers. Ryan fell on his knees and broke down crying until his family comforted him. He later visited Miller's grave, where Ryan briefly talked to it. He then asked his wife if he was a good man and lived a good life; which she confirmed; allowing him to feel he made their sacrifice worthwhile. He then saluted Miller's grave as an American flag blew in the background.
