You know, I was... I was forced to become Hank Henshaw out of desperation, but now I choose this face. I like it. And I wouldn't want to live in a world where I need to change the color of my skin to feel safe, to feel seen, to feel like I'm not a target. I'd rather change the world.
―J'onn J'onzz

J'onn J'onzz (also known as John Jones) is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Lena Luthor ) of the CBS/CW television series, Supergirl and a major character in the Arrowverse. He is one of the few surviving Green Martians left with shape-shifting and telepathic abilities. He is an alien refugee on the planet Earth, the leader of the Department of Extra-normal Operations and a member of the Superfriends, operating as the vigilante Martian Manhunter in National City. He also acts as both a mentor and father figure for Kara Zor-El and Alex Danvers. After he was revealed to be a Martian, J'onn began going by John Jones and a member of Supergirl's team, the Superfriends.

The Martian Manhunter was created by Joseph Samachson and Joe Certa.

History[]

Martian Manhunter Arrow

J'onn J'onzz was the son of M'yrnn J'onzz, the younger brother of Malefic J'onzz, the father of T'ania and K'hym J'onzz, and an unnamed son in possible future and the lover of M'gann M'orzz. He is a Green Martian and allegedly, the last of his kind, before it was revealed his father and brother were still alive. J'onn is both a mentor and father figure towards Kara and Alex, as well as one of the greatest heroes of both Mars and Earth.

J'onn preparing to shake Jeremiah Danvers' hand

Jeremiah Danvers introduces himself to J'onn.

After his family was killed by the White Martians, J'onn fled from Mars to Earth, to hide from his enemies as a refugee of the planet. After Jeremiah Danvers' supposed sacrifice, J'onn posed as Hank Henshaw, maintaining a cold and ruthless persona while reform the DEO and later recruit Kara and Alex to keep his promise to  protecting them. After revealing his secret to the Danvers sisters, he goes from a critic of Supergirl to an ally of hers.

During the Anti-Monitor crisis, it is revealed he is the Paragon of Honor, where he helped defeat the Anti-Monitor from ultimately destroying the Multiverse. In the new universe created by Oliver Queen and the other Paragons, John was restored as the director of the DEO.

Personality[]

As Hank Henshaw[]

As Hank Henshaw, J'onn takes the persona of a cold-hearted and critical individual. He is condescending towards Supergirl, and a cold boss towards Alex Danvers. However this is merely just an act on J'onn's part as his harsh attitude both convinces others he is the real Hank and his critical requirement towards Kara actually helps her become a better hero.

As the Martian Manhunter[]

However, after Alex and Kara found out J'onn was the last surviving Green Martian, he became more helpful to Supergirl and her allies. Due to the loss of his family, J'onn felt alone on Earth due to being the only alien on Earth. He seems to empathize with Kara when she first came to Earth, even disguising himself as a woman who looked like her birth mother and telling her it would take time for her to adjust to life on Earth. During the mid-season finale of Season 1 of Supergirl, though Astra was killed by Alex, J'onn took the blame to spare the sisters' friendship from deterring. However, when they revealed the truth to Kara, she forgave them both. According to Winn Schott, his nickname for J'onn as "Papa Bear" is a reflection on how J'onn is a father figure towards the younger members of the Superfriends due to him being a father to two daughters.

He is considered one of the most powerful Martians on his world. J'onn is also the Paragon of Honor, due to his high sense of justice. This makes him one of the seven purest individuals in the multiverse. He is also open to his allies, including Kara's friends Oliver Queen and Barry Allen, and even showed his true form to Team Flash without question.

Alex Danvers[]

Jonn and Alex Danvers

J'onn first heard of Alex when he was saved by her father, Jeremiah, who told him about his children and showed him a picture of his daughters, which was something J'onn could relate to due to having two daughters himself.

When Alex grew up to be a young adult, J'onn recruited her into the DEO to keep a closer eye on her because of his obligation to protect her and her sister due to honoring the request of her father Jeremiah. She was initially suspicious of J'onn because of his involvement in her father's disappearance. When he revealed the truth of how her father helped him, his secret identity as a Martian and alien refugee like her sister, Alex learned to trust him, but they kept his status as a martian a secret from Kara, but Alex told her sister who J'onn was anyways to save him from Non and Astra's forces.

Later, when a white Martian emerged from hiding in order to draw J'onn out, Kara and Alex learned their mentor's past, including the loss of his wife and daughters. This marked the first time J'onn, in a long one, opened his past to someone. Afterwards, J'onn congratulated the girls for their approach, claiming any man would Be proud to call Danvers sisters daughters. In "The Girl Who Has Everything" Alex killed Astra to save a helpless J'onn, but he lied to Kara and told her he killed her aunt to spare Alex's grief. He also thought that keeping the true circumstances of how Astra died from Kara prevented her and Alex's sisterhood from falling apart. However, it made matters worse for Alex, who couldn't stand keeping secrets from Kara. When J'onn was exposed as an alien, he and Alex were arrested and sent to Project Cadmus. However, Kara and Lucy Lane saved them and went on the run together. When they were escaping, J'onn used his mind-erasing powers on Jim Harper and saw visions of Alex's father, Jeremiah, being alive. They later returned to National City to help Supergirl, Cat Grant and Max Lord in their fight against Non, Indigo and their Kryptonian army.

After the advent of the Worldkillers that led to the death of his father, J'onn left the D.E.O. and promoted Alex to the position of Director.

In Season 6, J'onn and Alex work effortlessly to save Kara from the Phantom Zone. However, during their mission, J'onn treated Alex more like a soldier than a daughter, falsely believing it was the best way they could save Kara. However, after M'gann becomes a victim of the Phantom Zoners, this ultimate stops.

He later walked her down the aisle during her and Kelly's wedding, a role reserved for a father.

Relationship with Kara Danvers[]

Supermartian

J'onn first met (unofficially) met Kara when she was a child and struggled to fit in on Earth. Taking the form of her mother Alura as an FBI agent, J'onn convinced her she had to maintain her heritage as a Kryptonian for her family. The two formally met years later, when she had grown up to become the superhero Supergirl. To maintain his secret identity, J'onn posed as Hank Henshaw, a very cold, and distant man who enjoyed bringing Kara down. In reality, J'onn was demeaning towards her but this would only push her to become a better vigilante. However, Kara would grow frustrated with Hank's constant attitude toward her. In truth, he was a refugee and the last of his kind, just like Kara and her cousin Superman. While he revealed his true nature to Alex, they kept it a secret from Kara, thinking it was for the best. However, they were forced to reveal the truth about John's secret and Jeremiah's sacrifice when Astra's spend and their forces abducted him.

Later, when a white Martian emerged from hiding in order to draw J'onn out, Kara and Alex learned their mentor's past, including the loss of his wife and daughters. This marked the first time J'onn, in a long one, opened his past to someone. After seeing his intentions of killing the White Martian, Kara managed to talk him out of exacting revenge on the creature. Afterwards, J'onn congratulated the girls for their approach, claiming any man would Be proud to call Danvers sisters daughters. Touched, Kara hugged him but quickly dissipated it when remembering they were in the workforce and had to act professional.

In "The Girl Who Has Everything," J'onn was very concerned when Kara was trapped in an hallucination when she was infected with a Black Mercy. He was offended when James Olsen argued with him and found pretending to be Kara tedious. When Alex was forced to kill Astra because she was attacking J'onn, the latter claimed he was responsible to preserve the sisters' bond. However, it caused Kara to distance herself from J'onn and the DEO. When the truth came out, Kara understood her sister's and J'onn 's reasons. She grabbed his arm and held onto his hand, showing she forgave him.

Several weeks later, J'onn was forced to reveal himself as a Martian to help Kara defeat her opponent. After J'onn was arrested by Jim Harper and Lucy Lane, Kara convinced the latter to help her rescue her sister and mentor; however, they were forced to go on the run. Later, when Non's forces succeeded in their Myriad plot, J'onn and Alex stopped running and helped Supergirl in her penultimate fight with her uncle. Even though he was detained, Kara thanked him for helping her and kissed his forehead as a sign of friendship. J'onn later broke out of jail again and helped her fight off both Non and Indigo.

In Season 2, J'onn admitted to considering her a close friend and comrade. When Superman came to visit National City, whenever Kara is concerned, Clark worries about the supply of kryptonite J'onn has kept and how it can be used against them both. However, the Martian swears he would never hurt Kara or Clark and that the Kryptonite was only a precaution. After the battle with Metallo, Kara weakened from the Kryptonite Metallo had with him in his chest. After Clark accused J'onn of not caring what happens to his cousin, he immediately lashed out

During Season 6, he grew frustrated that they couldn't save Kara from the Phantom Zone. However, M'gann comforted him and acknowledged the father-daughter bond that the two aliens shared. After her rescue, J'onn embraced Kara, with relief that his surrogate daughter's well-being was assured and secured.

J'onn hopes for Kara to thrive and succeed as Supergirl, as her mentor and father figure. Even though she becomes a full fledged hero, J'onn still gives her advice.

Trivia[]

    • In the original comics, J'onn had one daughter, but in the Arrowverse, he had two. However, like the DC Animated Universe, he was given two as well.
    • He was initially portrayed as a Caucasian male detective when in his guise.
  • Superman considers J'onn one of the most powerful characters.
  • J'onn most likely came to Earth in the 1700s.
  • In the original comics, J'onn pretended that M'gann was his niece. In the series, they are changed from uncle and nephew to lovers.
  • Despite not being related to them, J'onn considers Kara and Alex as daughters and Esme as a granddaughter.
    • This is further stated by M'gann about Kara in Season Six, and Kara teased J'onn as being a grandfather to Esme when Alex adopted Esme. In "Kara*, Esme even referred to him as " Papa J'onn," further solidifying their grandfather-granddaughter relationship.
    • He also walked Alex down the isle during her wedding, a role the father of the bride/groom usually goes through, which further solidifying his father-daughter relationship with her.
