- “There are Gods and there are men. And there are those of us, who are in between. Many years ago, I refused a God's advance. I was cursed with agelessness. I've lived for years watching my loved ones die. I imagine you're sympathetic to that plaint.”
- ―Io to Perseus
Io is the deuteragonist in the 2010 remake of the 1981 film, Clash of the Titans. She is only mentioned in Wrath of the Titans and is portrayed by Gemma Arterton.
Background[]
Before the film, Io refused a god's advance and was cursed with agelessness. She watched many of her loved ones die while she lived on forever. She helped watch over Perseus since the day he was born and guided him to his family, but Io was too late in saving Danaë, Perseus' mother. She began watching him until the day he would finally revolt against the gods.
Physical appearance[]
Io is a young woman with long brown hair and brown eyes. She mostly wears her hair down or in a ponytail, and wears a white tunic along with a wrap that acts as a revolt against cape and hood
Personality[]
Appearances[]
Clash of the Titans[]
Instead of being a lover of Zeus like in the myths, Io falls in love with Perseus, whom she watched since he was a child. At the end of the film, after Zeus resurrected Io, she and Perseus embraced each other.
Wrath of the Titans[]
Io gave birth to a son, Helius, and made Perseus promise not to let their son hold a sword.
She died in between the two films. Perseus hadn't contacted his father since their meeting and didn't want Zeus to resurrect Io.
Quotes[]
- “A Beast? Medusa was beautiful once. So beautiful, that has tempted Poseidon. When he came for her, she ran to Athena's temple, thinking that the Goddess will protect her. She didn't. Poseidon took her on the cold floor. She prayed to Athena for comfort, but the Goddess felt nothing but disgust. She made sure no one would ever want Medusa again. One look at the creature she has become would turn any living thing to stone. I cannot assist you there, my curse prevents me. It was Athena's one bit of solace to Medusa, so the Medusa would never harm a woman. Only men are allowed in the temple. But no man has ever made it out.”
