Agent Ian Rider is the overarching protagonist of the first season of Amazon Prime's Alex Rider, which is based on the novel Point Blanc.

He was an agent who worked for the Special Operations division of MI6, the brother of John Rider and uncle to Alex Rider, becoming the guardian of the latter when he was orphaned at the age of six months.

History[]

Background[]

In the TV series, Ian actually makes an appearance, since Alex Rider only learned of his uncle's death at the beginning of the novel. A history seems adamant between Ian and Yassen since Ian nicknamed him "Yas" before Yassen eventually killed him. After his brother and sister-in-law's deaths, Ian adopted Alex, who he raised as if he were his own son.

As confirmed by his MI6 profile, Ian served the British Army in the Royal Dragoon Guard regimen for twelve years, serving two tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was a lieutenant commander before becoming an agent of MI6.

Ian took his nephew out on holiday, where he did activities with ALex that are covertly spy training missions. Nine years prior to the series, he hired Jack Starbright to help with raising Alex should anything happen to him. Over the years, Ian began treating her like family.

Season 1[]

Ian later picks up Alex from school and scolds him for breaking into the school and trying to take Tom's phone. After getting closer to discovering Point Blanc's secret, Ian is lured to an abandoned facility by his partner Martin Willby, where he is executed by his brother's former protege, Yassen Gregorovich.

The fact that the police said and died in a car accident is what made Alex suspicious of the story in the first place because his uncle had a reputation of being the pokiest driver. He tracks down Tom's phone and finds his uncle's abandoned car.

When Alex later finds Ian’s bullet-ridden car in a breakers yard, he is forced to finish Ian’s mission traces his footsteps and finds clues left by Ian along the way.

Season 2[]

Before confronting Damian Cray, Alex asks if Yassen shot and killed his uncle, which he later confirms.

Season 3[]

Alex is still embittered toward Yassen for killing his uncle, and even admits to wanting to take Scorpia down for Ian's death and Kyra's parents. He makes it clear to Gregorovich in "Recruit" that he will never forgive Yassen for his uncle's death but puts his hatred aside as they're allies for the time being.
