Hiccup is an awkward, young Viking boy who is considered an outcast among his people and will succeed his father Stoick the vast as the next chieftain of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. However, Hiccup eventually meets and befriends the Night Fury Toothless and overtime their friendship proves humans and dragons can get along.
He was portrayed by Mason Thames, who also portrayed Finney Blake in Scott Derrickson's horror film The Black Phone (2021).
Hiccup is the only child of Berk’s chieftain, Stoick the Vast, and the unconventional young Viking at the center of How to Train Your Dragon. Caught between the weight of Viking tradition and his own sense of compassion, he struggles to prove himself among the recruits while feeling like an outsider in his own village. His father’s expectations loom large, but no matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to live up to them. Everything changes when fate brings him together with Toothless, a wounded Night Fury. Instead of killing the dragon—what tradition demands—Hiccup makes the radical choice to spare its life. That single act of mercy sets in motion a transformation that challenges everything he has ever known. As he bonds with Toothless, Hiccup realizes that dragons are not the ruthless enemies his people believe them to be, but intelligent creatures capable of trust and loyalty.
Hiccup’s decision to stand by Toothless puts him at odds with his village and deepens the rift between himself and his father. He often masks his self-doubt with humor, using sarcasm as a shield against his feelings of inadequacy. In the end, he discovers that strength isn’t about following tradition, but about having the courage to forge a new path.
