- “I'll kidnap a thousand children before I let this company die, and I'll silence ANYONE who gets in my way!”
- ―Waternoose to Sulley angrily
Henry J. Waternoose III, more commonly known as Mr. Waternoose or also simply known by his surname Waternoose, is the overarching antagonist of the Monsters, Inc. franchise.
He is the former CEO of the company Monsters, Inc. Waternoose is notoriously a mentor for James P. Sullivan and holds him in high regard as the Top Scarer (only to eventually betray him and Mike by becoming Randall's partner-in-crime). Following his betrayal, Waternoose becomes more determined to save the company from bankruptcy, even if it means participating in Randall's evil scheme (despite his brief remorse over banishing Sulley and Mike).
Personality[]
Mr. Waternoose was the owner of the company Monsters Incorporated, which is dedicated to collecting energy through the screams of children who are scared by seeing monsters in their rooms. At first, he seemed to be like a father figure and mentor to James P. Sullivan, whom he considered his best scarer. Eventually, he ended up betraying him and Mike by banishing them both to the Himalayas so they couldn't return to Monstropolis, (although deep down Waternoose was reluctant to expel Sulley due to him being his best employee).
Despite being associated with Randall, Waternoose is more compassionate and sophisticated than him. To validate this, he felt remorse for betraying Sulley and Mike, even telling Randall that he wasn't half as scary as Sullivan is, showing that he still cares and respects him despite having desteoyed their bond.
It is said that Waternoose's desperation to keep Monsters, Inc afloat was what drove him to villainy; and although his objective was to kidnap and torture children, he felt that this was the only way to stop the energy crisis that the city was going through due to lack of scares for children. In fact, he was so desperate that he never thought there could be another way to solve the problem. This makes Waternoose fairly well-meaning and an extremist, as his goal is to keep the company that has been in his family for three generations from going under, making his motivation less villainous than Randall's, who thinks of beating Sulley and be the top scarer. By the end of the film, Waternoose had abandoned any morality, stating that he had no alternative but to kidnap children, and became more determined not to let anyone get in the way of his plans. An example is when Sullivan wanted to reason with him saying that he didn't have to do that, to which Waternoose said that he had no choice since scaring children was no longer enough to energize Monstropolis.
Ultimately, Waternoose's obstinacy resulted in his undoing, with his plans being exposed by Mike, and Waternoose angrily blaming Sullivan for ruining the company and making the energy crisis worse as he is arrested, believing the city will be without energy without the screaming and there would be no other way dr fix it. However, Waternoose was eventually proven to be wrong after the discovery that laughter was far more strengh than screaming, so the company went from scaring to making children laugh, thus ending the energy crisis and with both Mike and Sulley replacing Waternoose as the CEOs of Monsters, Inc.
