History[]
Book 1[]
Hakoda carried an injured Bato to an abbey, where he told his old friend to rest up and join him and the rest of the military when a military convoy came by. He also bore news of their father, stating that he awaited instructions on how to relocate him and the other Water Tribe men and offered to at least send word to the two of Hakoda's location as they accompanied Aang. However, in the comfort of their reunion, Katara and Sokka began to lose sight of where they were truly needed, as Aang began to feel betrayed and alone. Although at one point Sokka and Katara opted to accompany Bato on a journey to reunite with Hakoda, the siblings soon realized their duties to Aang and parted with the tribe member. Bato surmised that their father would be proud of his children knowing they were the Avatar"s protectors.
Book 2[]
Book 3[]
After the Earth Kingdom fell, Hakoda helped Team Avatar escape the Siege of Ba Sing Se, and was formally introduced to Aang some weeks after his coma. However Hakoda and Sokka decided that the group should split up. While Hakoda would recruit their old friends and allies, Team Avatar would guide in the Fire Nation until they meet each Luther at the rendezvous point. (The Awakening)
During the Invasion of the Fire Nation on the Day of the Black Sun, Hakoda was captured by Fire Nation Soldiers and sent to the prison on the Boiling Sea. (Day of the Black Sun. However, Hakoda was eventually liberated by Sokka and a reformed Prince Zuko, where he finally met his son's girlfriend, Suki. (The Boiling Rock,Part 2)
However, they were forced to separate when Azula attacked Team Avatar and their allies at the Western Air Temple. Katara was angry that she was forced to say goodbye to Hakoda again negate this war had turn them apart enough. Hakoda made the same promise that they would see each other again. The three were later reunited at the coronation of Fire Lord Zuko, where Hakoda embraced his children. (Sozin's Comet: Avatar Aang)
Post War[]
After the war, he attended the coronation of Fire Lord Zuko and became the Head Chieftain of the South Water Tribe. He faced a violent nationalist uprising led by his former friend Gilak, who also made an attempt on Hakoda's life. The chief of the Southern Water Tribe prevailed with help from his children, Team Avatar (Aang) and King Kuei of the Earth Kingdom. He oversaw the South's gradual reconstruction and modernization. He began a romantic relationship with Malina of Anga Qel'a, having opened up his heart to love again, presumably after his mother remarried her ex-fiance, Pakku. Even though Katara was upset to see her father had "moved on" from Kya, she later supported the relationship because a part of Hakoda would always love Kya. They later had dinner with Zuko, Sokka, Aang, Kuei, Toph, Kanna and Pakku, with all of the guests bringing their own traditional foods from all the Four Nations[1].
