You wish dragons to be free, among us, like equals? A toxic notion, my boy. History has shown that we are the superior species. What if your ideas were to spread? It would be the undoing of civilization as we know it.
―Grimmel to Hiccup

Grimmel the Grisly is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Drago Bludvist) of the DreamWorks animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He hunted down ask the Night Furies to near-extinction but Toothless escaped his slaughter. Now he sets his eyes on finishing the job. Grimmel is one of Hiccup's most hated rivals and the most dangerous adversary the Dragon Riders have ever faced.

Role

He is the unseen overarching antagonist in the first two films How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2, and the main antagonist of the third and final film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. He also serves as the unseen overarching antagonist of the 2011 short film Book of Dragons, the TV Series DreamWorks Dragons and the video game Dragons: Dawn of New Riders, as well as a playable character and major antagonist in the video game School of Dragons and finally as one of the two posthumous overarching antagonists of How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (along with Drago Bludvist) and the series Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Background

Official Description

Grimmel is a smart dragon hunter who is outraged at the idea that dragons can live alongside humans. Having believed that he had previously killed all the Night Furies, Grimmel is maddened to learn that the Alpha — Toothless — remains alive and free.
―Official description

Personality

Cruel, evil and vindictive, Grimmel is obsessed with looking for all the Night Furies and hunting them down and killing them. He was absolutely determined to look for Toothless and finish the job himself.He is also quite arrogant, as he views Hiccup lowly for for his ideas of dragons and Humans living together, passing him off as just a boy rather than a Chief of Berk and also claims to be the best dragon killer in the Archipeligo. He is quite intimidating by personality and appearance.

Grimel held Stoick in the highest regards,  calling him the greatest dragon hunter to have ever lived and claims that Stoick knew of him. He and Eret met in the past, who became well aware of Grimmel's work.

Though Grimmel was mocking of Hiccup, he still admitted the younger man for his fighting spirit.

Physical Appearance

Grimmel was a lanky and tall man with grey hair, light blue eyes, and pale skin. He has a long face, similar to that of Ruffnut's and Tuffnut's.

Quotes

Really? I never thought you'd care. Well, unlike you, when I was a boy and I came up on a Night Fury, I killed it where it slept. That simple act of courage made me a hero in my village. So, I decided to kill every last one, bringing real peace to the people of this world.

History has shown that we are the superior species.
―Grimmel showing his supremist views of humans being far superior than humans
I'm in the business of killing dragons, not retrieving them.
―Grimmel to the War lords
My dear Warlords. How go your plans to conquer the world?
―Grimmel to the War lords
Ah, a fighting spirit, I love it! Only, I'm afraid you are mistaken. You've never seen anything like me!

Where's your love of the hunt?
―{{{2}}}
Oh, don't feel too badly. You tried your best! But, you are nothing without your dragon!
―{{{2}}}
When all of this set and done, this young chief will hand me the Night Fury. They don't have a leader, just a boy.
―{{{2}}}
Call them off, Alpha. No reason for her to die, too.
―{{{2}}}
Save your breath. The only Alpha they respond to is me.
―{{{2}}}
Best of luck controlling them without an Alpha.

You still think he cares about you? Let's just see who he follows.

Trivia

  • Grimmel was intended to be younger, around the same age as Hiccup. However, it was changed to "give him a more seasoned appearance."
  • Due to his immense sadism, utter racism and genocidal intentions towards all dragons, and his merciless murdering of all the Night Furies except Toothless, Grimmel is considered by most fans to be the most evil, cruel, and depraved villain of any Dreamworks film and the franchise as a whole.
  • Despite being the main antagonist he doesn't play an active role until the third and final film in 2019, at least nine years since the first film's release
