Gerontius Took is a Tolkien character who is mentioned in The Hobbit and appears in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Background[]
Gerontius Took was the son of Thain Fortinbras Took I. He married adamanta Chubb, and they had twelve children. He became the twenty-sixth Thain in teh Shier. A friend of Gandalf, who gave him a pari of magical diamond studs, Gerontius went on many adventures before old age.
He was nicknamed the Old Took, not because of his age, but because of his many young relatives. He used to ask Gandalf to light up fireworks on Midsummer's Eve.
Personality[]
Gerontius' adventurous spirit was inherited by his children and his grandson, Bilbo Baggins. He loved his closest friends and family members and invited them to his extravigant parties on Midsummer's Eve.

An Unexpected Journey[]
Though he does not appear in the Theatrical cut, Gerontius is seen in a flashback in the extended edition, however. He is seen watching Gandalf's fireworks explode out during a midsummer's eve party. Bilbo was about three years old at the time.
