The relationship between Garmadon and Lloyd from the Ninjago franchise.

History[]

Season 1: Rise of the Snakes[]

Season 2: The[]

Season 3: Rebooted[]

Season 11: Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu[]

The Fire Chapter[]

Nya, Lloyd, and Zane learn from Kai, Cole, and Jay that it was Master Wu, not Garmadon, who was the great deceiver. They discover that there is a second Forbidden Spinjitzu scroll, identical to the one Aspheera stole from the Museum of Ninjago. The Explorer's Club had stored the other scroll and other dangerous artifacts in its archives for safety reasons. When the trio sneaks into the storage room, Lloyd is startled by a vision of Garmadon reflecting back at him in a mirror. Initially, he does not realize it is his own reflection until he notices that the figure in the mirror moves in perfect sync with him. Nya sees herself as a regular girl, and Zane appears only as a machine. Lloyd realizes that the Mirror of Dread reveals an individual's deepest personal fears. He admits that when he looks into the mirror, he sees the reflection of his father. Lloyd further explains that he is afraid of becoming just like Garmadon, which contrasts to the beginning of the TV series when he once aspired to be like his father during his childhood.

Ice Chapter[]

Later, when trapped in the Never-Realm, Lloyd talks to Akita, whom he thought was a regular wolf, about his past, including Garmadon, and how his father’s resurrection affected him. He told her things that he didn’t even tell the Ninja, much to Akita’s annoyance.

Season 15: Crystalized[]

The Fifth Villain[]

After escaping from Kryptarium Prison, Jay, Cole, and Lloyd survive the treacherous wilderness of the Sea of Sand with the help of Fugi-Dove. They are reunited with Zane, Kai, and Dareth at Twitch's gas station and discuss who the Crystal King is going to recruit next after they heard about the meeting from an unwitting Fugi-Dove. Kai carefully mentions Garmadon as the potential "fifth villain" to Lloyd, as he knows how badly things had ended between the Garmadon family back in Season 10. However, the Green Ninja rejects this and says that no one, not even himself, knows where his father is.

After Lloyd and the other Ninja figure out that the Mechanic is the Fifth Villain, Lloyd and the Ninja capture the Mechanic at his abandoned video game lair, with Lloyd disguising himself as the Mechanic. However, Lloyd is exposed by Harumi, resulting in her capturing him.

The Spider's Design[]

Lloyd wakes up in a vengestone cage after being bested by Mister F and recaptured after trying to escape from Harumi. As the two converse with one another, Lloyd fails to appeal to him to spare his friends when they are on their way looking for him. Harumi shouts that Lloyd doesn’t know her, but she can see through him. He has a darkness within him that Lloyd continues to push back, no matter how hard he tries. Lloyd, fearing she is talking about his deepest fear of being like Garmadon, shakes his head and pretends not to understand what she is talking about. However, Harumi tells Lloyd that she knows he is part Oni like Garmadon and that he is stronger with his inner darkness. Lloyd snaps that he is nothing like his father. Later, Harumi provokes Lloyd into accessing his powers of Destruction, which allows him to break out of the cage. Amused, Harumi says that Lloyd is just like Garmadon and that the anger makes him stronger. Lloyd yells at her to stop saying that. Just as he is about to kill Harumi, Lloyd comes to his senses, giving Mr. E enough time to knock Lloyd down. Harumi then “welcomes back” the son of Garmadon, emphasizing his bloodline further.

An Unexpected Reunion Between Father and Son[]

Lloyd escapes from Harumi and is saved by Nya and his uncle Wu. As Jay, Kai, Zane, and Cole fight for their lives out on the vengestone warriors and the Crystal Army as a whole, Nya and Lloyd worry about how the Overlord could return. Wu explains that the overlord is pure evil and cannot be destroyed. He was hoping that the Overlord resurfaced, but not in their lifetimes. Wu tells his two students that he has been getting newspaper clippings in the mail. At first, he thought they were just random, but he slowly realized that someone was trying to warn him. Lloyd thought this person might have a way to defeat the Overlord. Wu and Lloyd go to the delivery warehouse and ask Antonia about the clippings by showing her the code. Lloyd wonders if there is a database to check the newspaper clipping barcodes, but Antonia says their database is in their memory. She recognizes that it comes from Nelson's route and asks him where the letter came from. Nelson figures out that the delivery was from Vinny Folson's apartment, which confuses both Lloyd and Wu.

Then, Lloyd and Wu head to Vinny's apartment building. Lloyd thinks about how Vinny could know about the Overlord's return, and Wu believes only Vinny can answer that question. They quietly enter the apartment building and go to apartment 22. Lloyd knocks on the door, and unexpectedly, both uncle and nephew hear the occupant living on the other side of the door. However, Master Wu and Lloyd are shocked when Garmadon opens the door. With wide eyes, Lloyd says, "Dad?" Garmadon acknowledges his son's name, as the two never expected to see each other ever again. Lloyd's earlier questions about his father's whereabouts, which he first asked at Twitchy's gas station, are answered during their unexpected reunion at Folson's apartment. However, Garmadon's sudden return to the series raises more questions.[1]

After standing awkwardly at the door, Lloyd gets angry when Garmadon simply says “Hmm,” as this reunion takes place a few years later instead of just a few weeks or even a month. He starts to interrogate his father about where he has been all this time. Garmadon allows Wu and Lloyd back into the apartment. Garmadon insists he was afraid that this would happen, as an irritated Lloyd and Wu ask Garmadon what he has been up to. As he tells his brother and son about his journey of self-discovery, only Wu is lenient with Garmadon. However, Lloyd gets upset with his father's story, insisting that he knows his father and Garmadon will never change. As Garmadon continues to explain that he learned empathy by taking care of the plant, Lloyd snaps and presses on the reason they are there is because of the clippings Garmadon sent Wu and the ninja through the mail. Wu admits they slipped his mind and further asks his brother why he sent clippings instead of just talking to them. Garmadon explains he wanted to be left alone and didn’t believe that he could confront his family after everything he had done to them. Lloyd insists they do not need Garmadon’s help, but Wu insists otherwise because the overlord has Harumi on his side, and allies are thin for the Ninja.

The former warlord is surprised to hear this from Wu, and he stops taking care of his plant to talk to them. He insists that Harumi was like the daughter he never had, causing a very exasperated and slightly jealous Lloyd to muse on his frustrations silently. Knowing that Garmadon will not change his mind about leaving the life he has been leading, Lloyd sneers at his father before storming out of the room. Garmadon is somewhat hurt by how Lloyd sees him now. However, when Wu looks back at Garmadon, his brother changes from hurt to indifference. As the two leave the apartment, Wu and Lloyd are suddenly knocked down a bit by a blast on the side of the wall. One of the blasts from the Crystal Warrior’s staff takes out Christofern, Garmadon’s fist. Enraged, Garmadon turns into his Oni form and begins attacking the soldiers with his Destruction blasts. As Wu and Lloyd watch the battle from Vinny’s destroyed apartment, Wu tells Lloyd to heed the events before them. The Vengestone warriors are not immune to Garmadon’s power. He also explains to Lloyd that to defeat the Crystal Army and the Overlord, he will have to unleash his Oni side.

After Garmadon “avenges” Christofern, he decides to help train Lloyd in unleashing his Oni powers so Lloyd can go up against the Overlord and survive. In his own way, Garmadon still loved Lloyd underneath his criticism and sardonic behavior, and in a way could have thought he was protecting him and hoping that he could survive this.
