Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger is a minor character in The Lord of the RIngs series. He is a close friend of Frodo Baggins, and the brother-in-law of Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck.
The Lord of the Rings[]
In Tolkien's legendarium, Fredegar Bolger was born S.R. 1380 (TA 2980). He was born to Odovacar Bolger and Rosamunda Took and had one sister, Estella, who would eventually marry Meriadoc Brandybuck. He was also one of the guests at Bilbo's Farewell Party. After Bilbo left, Fredegar became one of the Conspirators, friends of Frodo who knew he carried the Ring that Bilbo once wore.
The Fellowship of the Ring[]
Fatty WAS the fifth hobbit in Frodo Baggins' company (along with Sam, Pippin, and Merry), and he helped Frodo get to his new home in Little Creek. They celebrated Frodo's fifieth birthday party at Bag End. Fatty left with Merry to get things ready for Frodo's arrival. However, during the journey, Fatty and his friends encountered the Nazgûl. Fatty refused to enter the Old Forest and decided to act as Gandalf's messenger should the Wizard arrive and decided to serve as a decoy for the Nazgul so his friends could make their escape.
Fatty returned back to the Shire, where he acted as Frodo to act less suspicious as Frodo journeyed to destroy the One Ring.
During this time, in The Return of the King, Fatty was victim to Saruman's rule, especially due to Lotho Sackville-Baggins.
Fatty called in a group of partisans to fight Saruman's forces. However, they were immediately defeated and imprisoned. As soon as his release, he could no longer become "Fatty" any more.
