Ezylryb is a major protagonist of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series by Kathryn Lasky.
He is the legendary Lyze of Kiel who Soren idolized as a child. He renounced his warrior ways and eventually settled in The Great Tree of Ga'Hoole, where lived out the rest of his days as a pacifist and became the ryb of colliering and weather interpretation, eventually becoming Soren's mentor.
Background[]
Ezylryb was known as Lyze of Kiel, born to Ulfa and Rask. He had a brother named Ifghar and a sister named Lydia. They were brothers in arms and very close, even Ezylryb giving his brother his battle claws. However, they were in love with the same woman, Lil, who chose Lyze. Similar to Soren and Kludd, Ifghar got jealous of Ezylryb. During the war of the Ice Claws, Ezylryb and Lil had a child together, but thought they lost it during the war.
Later, Ezylryb became a peace lover after his mate was killed on accident and became a ryb at Ga'Hoole Tree and taking along his friend, Octavia, with him.
He became a mentor to the Barn Owl, Soren and was resourceful in some of their missions.He appeared in The Journey, The Rescue, The Siege, The Shattering, The Burning, The First Collier, and The Rise of a Legend.

Most people believed him to be eccentric but Ezylryb was wise, loving and intelligent. , He also grew fond of Soren especially after he saved his life. Ezylryb often worries for everyone's safety, especially his protege. The prime reason for this is because Ezylryb came to see Soren as a son.
He is also a pacifist, ever since his wife was killed and his brother turned against him. He was also close with his nest maid, Mrs. Octavia much like Soren and Eglantine were with Mrs. P.
Appearance[]
Ezylryb is an old Screech owl with both white and brown feathers. It is often noted by most people that he sheds his feathers from time to time. Ezylryb as Lyze of Kiel lost two of his talons.
Abilities[]
- Combats: As Lyze of Kiel, Ezylryb used to fight like a pro. However, ever since his self-exile, retirement and becoming a pacifist, Ezylryb doesn't engage in combat anymore. During the band's rescue of him, Ezylryb stands by and watches as Soren and his friends fight the Pure Ones.
- Weather Interpretation: Being the ryb (teacher) of weather, Ezylryb is able to keep track of the weather.
- Flight: Ezylryb is an expert in flying, mostly trusting his gizzard over his head, as he advises Soren on how to fly when they are flying through a monsoon.
- Mentoring skills: Ezylryb knows how to teach other owls. However, Due to his eccentricity, people question his skills as a teacher. However, Ezylryb was a wise and supportive mentor to his students especially towards his favorite student Soren, who often came to Ezylryb for advice.
- History: Ezylryb was well versed in Ga'Hoole's history, having several books that covered the stories of Hoole, The first king.

Soren[]
Soren was one of Ezylryb's student and ward who he first met in "The Journey." After Soren and the Band saved Ezylryb's life, he had become grateful to them. Throughout the book series Soren always goes to Ezylryb for advice whenever he is lost. At the end of "The Shattering'', Ezylryb give Soren his battle clause for his and the band's journey dropping off Dewlap with the Glauxian brothers. He outright confirms that this will make everyone realize Soren is his ward and serve as a his protection, confirming that Ezylryb views the later as a son.
Soren was devastated by Ezylryb's passing, as he was his mentor and the only father figure in his life after his father's passing.
Lil[]
Lil was Ezylryb's mate in the books. However, she was killed in the War of the Ice Claws, and he swore off fighting forever. They were eventually reunited when Ezylryb died and entered Glauxmora.
Trivia[]
- Ezylryb actually never stopped fighting in the film, unlike his book counterpart, where he became a pacifist. However, he doesn't enjoy fighting and actually calls one of his battles a "distant memory" ]at one point.
- The first part of his name, "Ezyl" is an anagram of his birth name, spelled backwards. Then, he just added "Ryb" at the end of his name, thus making it Ezylryb.
