Esmeralda is the deuteragonist of the 1996 animated film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She is the first to show Quasimodo kindness by protecting him from his oppressors, mainly Judge Claude Frollo. However, Esmeralda ultimately falls in love with Phoebus, who saw her as an independant, fiery young woman.
