Elena Rivera (also known as Abuelita) is the central antagonist and a supporting character in the film, Coco. She is voiced by Renee Victor.
Background[]
Abuelita's actual name is Elena Rivera, second-born daughter of Coco Rivera and Julio. Elena grew up in the time of her grandmother, Mama Imelda She had one sibling, an older sister named Victoria. Elena learned the importance of family and learned to make shoes.
Personality[]
Abuelita is an exact copy of her grandmother, Mamá Imelda: though both women may appear strict and intimidating, Elena and Imelda are strong, maternal woman. She came to dislike music not because of Imelda's past experience with her husband leaving but because of an incident that caused her mother, Coco to accidentally hurt herself. It caused pain for both Elena and her older sister, Victoria. Elena continued the ban on music that her grandmother and mother before her did.
Elena admits that she is hard on her grandchildren but is only so because she cares for them. What appears to worry her is Miguel's tendencies to go to Mariachi Plaza and has forbidden anyone in the family going down there. She has a fiery personality that is not to be reckoned with, as she will use her shoe as a weapon.
