Elena Salvatore (née Gilbert) is the main protagonist of The Vampire Diaries franchise. She is the daughter of Isobel Flemming and John Gilbert, the foster daughter of Alaric Saltzman, the stepsister of Josie and Lizzie Saltzman, adoptive daughter and niece of Grayson and Miranda Sommers-Gilbert, the adoptive sister and cousin of Jeremy Gilbert, and the wife of Damon Salvatore. As far as close relationships go, she has been best friend of Bonnie Bennett and Matt Donovan, and her sister-in-law Caroline Forbes. She is also the former lover and sister-in-law of Stefan Salvatore, and
Elena is a human and revealed to be a Petrova doppleganger and descendant of Katerina Petrova. in later episodes. She was temporarily a vampire but took the Cure to restore her humanity. Elena is the last surviving descendant of the Petrova family and struggles with her conflicts with the Salvatore brothers and she ultimately ends up with Damon.
