Background[]
Before the series, Eddard adopted his sister's and Rhaegar Targaryen's son, Jon Snow to hide him from those who wish to eradicate House Targaryen. He raised his nephew and led Jon to believing he was a child born of illegitimacy. It caused friction between himself and his wife, Catelyn, who was left unaware of Jon's true parentage as her husband's nephew.
