- “Come away from there! It’s not natural, none of it. It’s obvious, he’s under some dark spell”
- ―Dori to Ori
Dori is a supporting protagonist in the Middle-Earth franchise. He appears as a supporting character in the 1937 novel, The Hobbit and the 2012-2014 film franchise of the same name. He is one of the secondary tritagonists of An Unexpected Journey and a supporting character in The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies. He is one of the twelve companions of Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield on the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. In the films, he is the brother of Nori and Ori, relationship that was not specified in the book.
He is portrayed by Mark Hadlow in the film trilogy adaptation.
Background[]
Personality[]
Dori's personality is greatly expanded upon in the film series' adaptation made by Peter Jackson, and is described as fussy and overprotective of Nori and Ori. Allegedly, it is Dori's personality that causes him and Nori to often clash. He acts polite towards Gandalf, addressing him as "Master Gandalf" and offering tea. However, this does not stop Dori from giving accusations to Gandalf, as is the case with meeting Beorn for the first time because he failed to mention that Beorn was a skin-changer. The books describe him as agreeing with Bilbo and Nori about meals and tea and having them at a proper moment. He disliked unnatural things, thinking that Beorn was under some dark spell but Gandalf told Dori that Beorn was under no enchantment but his own.
He is sometimes getting too overprotective of his brothers, which was something that had distanced himself from Nori. However, Dori was just merely looking after his brothers because he loves them very dearly and holds his friends in the highest regard. He personally said goodbye to Bilbo when he left and bowed towards him in a friendly gesture, even seen crying when Bilbo leaves.
