She was removed from these positions later on in 1996, when Lord Voldemort was publicly revealed to be still alive, and returned to the ministry, eventually working as a judge under Voldemort's supremacist regime from 1997 to 1998.

Umbridge being the witch who sent the dementors after Harry and his cousin Dudley is omitted from the film.
Even though its implied in the books, it is shown outright that Umbridge does torture the students there as she made everyone in the Dumbledore's Army write with her blood quills tortured students, with Fred and George even comforting a one year student about the scars on his hand.

Trivia
Dolores Umbridge is considered one of (if not) the most hated Harry Potter characters (often even surpassing Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange).
She was so hated that Imelda Staunton who portrayed Dolores hated her own character and even nearly vomited when Umbridge scarred Harry Potter's hand.
