You've been trying to find a way into his pack. Trying to earn his trust. Trying to fight for him. You've had it wrong this whole time. You don't fight for a leader-- you fight for a leader's cause.
―Derek Hale

Derek Hale is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Liam Dunbar and Malia Tate) of the MTV original series Teen Wolf and the tritagonist of its film sequel, Teen Wolf: The Movie.

Derek is the former Alpha of the Hale Pack and a member of the McCall Pack, the only son of Talia Hale, the brother of Laura and Cora Hale, the nephew of Peter Hale, the biological paternal cousin of Malia Tate, and the father of Eli Hale. He is the mentor and close friend of Scott McCall, a younger, bitten werewolf who Derek formed a strong brotherly relationship with.

He is portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin, who also portrayed Superman/Clark Kent in both the Arrowverse and Superman and Bizarro from Superman & Lois.

Background[]

After teaching Scott how to control his powers and  Peter killing every conspirator involved in the fire, Derek killed him to avenge his sister and steal his status as an Alpha werewolf. Derek then started to create his own pack, recruiting his own beta werewolves - Erica Reyes, Isaac Lahey, Jackson Whittemore and Vernon Boyd - to ward off the Alpha Pack. He tried recruiting Scott into the pack but this never worked. However, the newly formed Pack had to  help Scott and Stiles deal with Gerard and the Kanima first.

Unfortunately Erica and Boyd were later captured by the Alpha Pick as well as Cora, Derek's thought to be dead sister. He was once again joined by Scott and Stiles dealing with the Pack and the human sacrifices being  committed by Derek's then-girlfriend Jennifer Blake. Soon they learned that the Alpha pack wanted to recruit not just Derek but his protege Scott as well. However, to save Cora's life after she was poisoned with mistletoe by the Darach, Derek gave up his Alpha spark to save her. Now more compassionate without his powers, he became a more helpful mentor to Scott and the McCall Pack.

This character's History is in complete. Missing parts of the recap: 1x3-1x12, all the events from Season 2 and 3

Early History[]

Young Derek Hale

As a teenager, Derek was in love with Paige Krasikeva, a young human girl. Derek was impressionable and easily manipulated by his uncle, Peter into believing that his relationship with Paige would be doomed because she never knew he was a werewolf. However, by the time that Derek wanted to intervene, he was too late. Rather than watching Paige suffer from the werewolf bite, he gives her the one request of taking her life. Derek's Werewolf Eyes only turned blue because werewolves taking an innocent human life causes their eyes to change regardless of the consent Additionally Derek's sacrifice on the Nemeton was merely an accidental. It allowed Jennifer Blake to come to power.

In 2005, Derek began a love affair with Kate Argent, who was secretly a werewolf hunter who started the affair only to learn information about the Hale family. When Derek and Laura are at school, Kate and her conspirators burned down the Hale house, killing Talia, and ten people died in the fire, but Peter and Cora survived the incident. Peter's body was covered in burns, causing him to fall into a coma for years until his wounds healed. Cora, believing that the family had all died, fled to South America. Meanwhile, Derek felt great remorse for the incident and was ashamed to tell his living family that he was the reason why the Argents were able to attack them so easily. Derek and Laura fled to New York City and lived there peacefully for six years.

in 2011, Derek and Laura heard about recent and horrendous animal attacks in Beacon Hills. One of the incidents involved a deer with a spiral burned on its carcass, and the sign symbolizes the werewolves' revenge. Laura never returned, so Derek followed her. Upon his return, he found Laura was dead, having been killed by an unnamed werewolf and dismembered by the Argent hunters to prevent her from being revived.

Season 1[]

Derek Wolf Moon

When Derek found two teenagers, Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski, in the woods near the ruins of his former home, he wanted to know what they were doing there. After getting no solid answer, he gave Scott his inhaler and later sensed that McCall was a newly bitten Beta Werewolf. That Friday night, Derek spied on Scott from a distance. When the younger werewolf began having side effects of his first full moon, Derek drove Allison home, claiming to be a friend of Scott's. He stole her jacket and lured Scott into the woods by leaving it there. Suddenly, hunters led Chris Argent, who shot Scott in the arm. However, Derek helped the younger Beta, and the two escaped. Scott accused Derek of being the one who turned him into a werewolf, but Derek didn't correct Scott's accusation at first. Because of their shared status as werewolves, Derek told Scott that they were brothers' lycanthropy now before leaving in the woods

1x02 Derek Second Chance 3

After seeing Scott shift during a lacrosse game, Derek went into Scott's house in fear of him getting caught and alerting the Argents of his presence. He threatened to kill him if he went out to play. Later, Derek returned Allison's jacket to her (Anonymously) as a warning. Derek also took his sister's body and buried her under a Wolfsbane vendetta spiral. Later, Scott went to Derek's house to confront him, taking the older werewolf to leave Allison alone. Derek warned him again that everything would fall apart when the people Scott loved if he transformed into a werewolf. The next day, Derek was arrested under suspicion of murder by the Beacon County Sheriff's Station when Stiles and Scott found the grave and Laura's body. When Stiles went to question Derek about his sister, Derek told Stiles that he could convince Scott not to play. Derek was released on a technicality when the medical examiner identified the hair found on Laura to be a wolf. Derek, who watched the game from afar, saw Jackson inspecting Scott's lacrosse glove and finding his claws.

A few days later, Derek was hiding in the ruins of his old house when he saw a sheriff's deputy coming to inspect it and make sure it is abandoned. However, Derek scares the deputy away from his house by using his animal instincts to make deputy's dog terrified. After the trick works, Derek sees Scott making his way to the house, asking for the older werewolf's help. After leaving the house, a stoic Derek listens to Scott apologize for him and Stiles getting Derek arrested and therefore, alerting the hunters of his presence. The boy tells Derek that he dreamed about hurting someone close to him but someone else got hurt; Derek realizes Scott is talking about the attack the other night. After he confirms that Scott can harm and potentially kill someone under the Alpha's influence, Derek takes pity on the younger werewolf and advised Scott to go back to the accident sight so Scott could remember in exchange for something else. While Scott insisted that he wanted to know if he hurt the bus driver, Derek easily guessed Scott is actually afraid of hurting his girlfriend Allison.

On his way to the hospital, Derek is accosted and antagonized by Chris Argent and his hunters, who damage the window of his car to spite him. After the hunters leave, Derek arrives at the hospital and visits Garrison Myers in his room, where he goads the patient to look at him. Before Myers succumbed to his wounds, he apolgized to Derek for his role in the Hale fire (though Derek was unaware of this at the time). After the bus driver dies, Derek returns to his abandoned house in Beacon Hills Preserve, where he is confronted by Scott McCall, who still believes that Derek was the one who bit him and killed the bus driver and Laura Hale. Angered by Scott's that to tell the sheriff and everyone else, Derek throws him down the stairs and the two begin to fight. For the first time, Derek revealed his werewolf form when Scott threw him across the room and into a wall. After beating the younger werewolf in combat, Derek calms down and returned to human form. As he tells Scott that everything that happened is not their fault, Scott accuses him of being the werewolf who bit him. After Derek insists that he is not the one who bit him, Scott suddenly remembers the events from a few nights ago when he touches Derek's scratch marks on him. Two nights ago, the Alpha inflicted a similar wound on Scott when he was trying to save Myers. Furthermore, the werewolf from Scott's memories had red eyes, not blue like Derek's. The latter informs Scott that they are just Betas, and the werewolf is the Alpha, the most dangerous of their kind and the one his sister was hunting. It also turns out that Scott is the one the Alpha wants, as bitten werewolves are a part of the pack of the Alpha who bites them. ("Pack Mentality")

Season 2[]

Season 3[]

Warning: Since 3x05 is mainly a flashback/present day storytelling compared to Once Upon a Time series, the order of events in the past is told first and in the correct order.

Hale Family

The Hales plot to take down Deucalion.

Eventually, Derek guessed that Deucalion lived in the same apartment building as their allies, Allison and Chris. The entire Hale Pack plotted to take out the leader of the Alpha Pack. However, knowing Scott, he anticipated that his ally would try and speak to Deucalion. Scott came to the loft, where Derek told him that they were going after Deucalion and that he was helping them. Later that night, at an abandoned mall, Derek and the others followed Scott and Isaac to the abandoned mall. However, Derek's plan failed when Deucalion revealed he didn't come alone either. During the skirmish, Derek targeted the Demon Wolf; however Kali quickly defends her leader she starts fighting Derek. While Derek gets the upper hand on Kali, she got the better of Derek when Kali, the twins, and Ennis incapacitated Cora Boyd, Scott, and Isaac. Kali voiced her dissatisfaction that Derek didn't deserve a place in The Alpha Pack, though Deucalion implied that some showed more promise than others. He looked at Derek's ally Scott, who noticed Deucalion's interest in him for a brief second. The Werewolves gave Derek an ultimatum: kill his beta Boyd or his sister, Cora. Fortunately, Allison came to defend the pack by using her father's flash-bang arrows and temporarily disorienting the Alphas' eyesight.

As Scott goes to fight Ennis, the two werewolves collide, and causes Scott to slide a way. For a brief moment, Derek, Allison, and Deucalion (through his werewolf eyes) sees Scott's eyes flash red for a second before their fight continues. However, Derek came to his friend's defense and began fighting Ennis instead. Scott then came to aid his mentor and slashed Ennis' legs. Unfortunately, Ennis and Derek fell three stories to the floor, critically injured before Isaac pulled Scott to safety and began comforting his friend. However, unbeknownst to Scott, Derek survived the fall and stumbled out of the abandoned mall, although he was barely alive. He came across Jennifer's car and put his bloody hand on her window, showing her he was critically wounded before Derek collapsed on the floor.

End Warning

Season 4[]

Season 5[]

Despite Derek not appearing in Season 5, his presence is still noticable among the cast, especially by Scott in Season 5a.

Season 6[]

As of Season 6b, Derek went on the run from the FBI after being accused of murdering innocent civilians. His friend Stiles learned about during his internship in Quantico.

During one of the FBI operations,he found Stiles and carried him out to safety when the operation failed. Chris Argent, who was desperately trying to find others to help their friends, Scott and his pack, found Derek. Kate Argent confronted them and stole the yellow wolfsbane from Derek. Kate still wanted revenge on Scott for his "role" in Allison's death. She revealed her intention of delivering it to her father in hopes that it will get her back in Gerard's good graces. However, Derek and Chris warned her that Gerard would not be grateful and have her killed as well. Kate Argent didn't believe them and got away.

Knowing Scott was in trouble, Derek and Stiles returned to Beacon Hills to help their pack mates. After Deucalion was shot and killed by the hunters, Derek and Scott shared a brief reunion before returning too the task at hand. They helped their friends fight off Tamora Monroe, Gerard Argent, and the Anukite. Unfortunately, when they were at the school, Tamora shot Scott with the yellow wolfsbane bullet, earning Malia's rage.  This required Derek to burn it out of his system with a handheld torch. Half-carrying Scott to the science room, Derek burns the yellow wolfsbane out of Scott's wound. Knowing Scott is safe, Derek left him on the floor. He was unfortunately turned to stone by the Anuk-ite when it transformed into Jennifer Blake. However, Derek was saved when Scott blinded himself and fought the Anukite as Stiles killed it, restoring every werewolves it petrified. Derek, Lydia and Malia found Scott and Stiles in the library, where Derek told his friend that he had to heal soon or his blinding will be permanent. To activate his accelerated healing, Malia kissed Scott.

Two years into the future, Derek still rolled with the McCall pack.

The Movie[]

Personality[]

Derek, as a teenager, was fairly like Scott when he was younger, at least according to Derek's uncle, Peter. Like Scott, Derek wanted to separate his human life from his werewolf one and strives to be normal. He insisted playing his sports teams like Scott did and had little control of his transformations at the time when they were both sixteen.

He could be hapless cocky, as seen in his first interactions with Paige Krasikeva, by playing basketball in the hall when she was practicing the cello in the music room. However, as a teenager and an adult, Derek could be quite charming. At first, Paige apparently didn't like Derek. However, the faint smile she had when Derek left the music room is shown that Paige may have liked him. She could see that Derek was something special, presumably knowing he was a werewolf the entire time. She later realized his kind heart when his "cocky" attitude was just an act he put on in front of his friends. It also implied that his relationship with Paige caused him great happiness; however, he never told her that he was a werewolf for fear of her leaving him if she found out. After being forced to kill his girlfriend when she rejected the bite, Derek's eyes turned from gold to blue. It is also implied that Derek was easily manipulated, as Peter was the one who convinced him to let Ennis bite Paige so that they could be together and Kate Argent tricked him into a relationship so she could kill his family on a lunar eclipse.

After Paige's death and his family were killed in a fire, Derek fled Beacon Hills and lived with his sister in New York. Here, he showed great remorse for letting Kate manipulate him. The act turned him into becoming embittered, sullen, and distant from everyone.

As an adult, Derek became more stoic, antisocial and secluded, blaming himself for Paige Krasikeva's death and Kate's manipulations. However, he still retained love for his family, especially for his sister, Laura, and was devastated when he found her bisected of being murdered by the Alpha. He was adamant on finding him, even if it meant putting up with two teenagers, Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski. As a mentor, he taught Scott how to control his shifts through fear and intimidation. Despite the boys causing him trouble and threatening to kill them on multiple occasions, Derek still protected them when the situation called for it. He also had some level of sympathy for Scott, but continued insinuating that the bite was a gift, even though it had killed his girlfriend when he was younger.

When Derek became the Alpha, he started to abuse his new powers and began to turn self-deprived teenagers, Erica, Isaac and Boyd, into Werewolves. However this was more out of desperation because Derek was building his own pack so he could fight off against the alpha pack. He became more determined to protect the newly bitten Betas, either from the Kanima or Gerard. However, as time went on, Derek came to somewhat regret his actions, including his lack of trust. When he found out Scott only joined the pack and was working with Gerard, Derek was hurt by this betrayal.

Still, Derek protected Beacon Hills and innocents from harm, showing a selfless side to him that he never really let go.

After the loss of his powers, seeing Scott rising as a True Alpha and consulting with his mother's spirit, Derek became a more kind and compassionate mentor for Scott and the McCall family. This effectively repaired his friendship with Scott and helped them protect Beacon Hills. Despite his estranged relationship with Allison and Chris, he was willing to work with them. He became even more happy when he started a relationship with Braeden, his first real relationship since Paige died. Derek is also loyal to a fault and protective of those he cares for, mainly towards his friends, younger sister, his son, his Betas and Scott. He is still mistrustful towards Peter Hale, and has bluntly stated that none of them like him. This it's not surprising considering the fact that Peter killed Laura for her power and tried to do the same to Scott.

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

Werewolf Physiology: Additionally, since Derek was born a werewolf and grew up in the supernatural community,  he has infinite knowledge on how to being a werewolf. He can keep control during a full moon, doesn't see the bite as a curse but a gift and knows how to help train newly bitten werewolves remain in control during a full moon. Being a True Alpha,  the son of Talia Hale and coming from a long line of werewolves, Derek is considered  a very powerful werewolf.

  • Super Strength: Derek, being a werewolf, had superhuman strength that enabled him to perform extraordinary physical feats. He could break and snap thick chains, punch through solid stone walls, lift grown adults, and throw them through solid surfaces and across rooms with ease. He could also easily defeat younger or newly-bitten werewolves such as Scott McCall, Isaac Lahey and Erica Reyes.
  • Super Speed: As a Werewolf, Derek could move, run, and react at speeds greater than even the finest human athlete. He could easily out run the Hunters and the sheriff's men who were hunting him. He could run faster when he was moving on all fours. As a wolf, he presumably moved faster than a normal Wolf a week.
  • Super Agility/Reflexes : Derek uses his super agility and Reflexes the best, and mostly uses this combined with his Athleticism. He was a star basketball player just like his uncle Peter (mostly because they used their agility to their advantage. He was able to keep up in a fight with Scott and his other Betas as well.
  • Super Durability: As a Werewolf, Derek was much more durable and resistant to blunt force trauma than a normal human. During his and Scott's skirmish with Ennis,  Derek was unwittingly pushed over a ledge by Ennis and survived falling three stories without sustaining fatal injuries. However, he nearly died and it took Jennifer mysteriously healing him that led him to surviving.
  • Super Senses: As a Werewolf, Derek could use his glowing eyes to see in total darkness, across long distances, and to perceive supernatural phenomena that cannot be seen with human eyes as well as use his heightened senses of smell and hearing to accomplish feats typically impossible for regular humans, such as sense approaching enemies through their scent or heartbeat, among others.
    • Supernatural Eyes: He can see a Kitsune's aura and the Nemeton.
    • Superhuman Hearing: Derek can hear people from a mile away, a faint whisper and someone's heart beat so he can tell if the prisoner or target is lying.
    • Super Smell: He can track people by smelling their scent,, chemo signs, pheromone levels. This allows them to track animals, human, and supernatural creatures across long distances solely by scent.
  • Accelerated Healing: As a Werewolf, Derek possessed the ability to heal from most mild to moderate wounds within moments, and more severe wounds within hours. It prevents him from getting drunk and getting high on drugs or rapidly healing from injuries whey it took weeks. Even after his fight with Peter Hale in the hospital and at the Hale house, Derek healed within a few minutes.
    • Longevity: As a Werewolf with an accelerated healing ability,, Derek had a highly extended lifespan and would be able maintain his youthful appearance for much longer than a normal human.
  • Pain Absorption: As a Werewolf, Derek's veins turned black whenever he activated his ability. He is able to touch animals, humans and supernatural creatures to remove their pain. He first demonstrated this ability at the age of figurehead trying to relieve his dying girlfriend's pain. He would later take this ability to another level when he sacrificed his Alpha spark to heal Cora from her mistletoe poisoning
  • Control During a Full Moon: Due to being born a werewolf, Derek would rarely fall under its disastrous effects. However, under certain conditions, Derek is still capable of losing control during this time.
  • Animal Instincts: As a Werewolf, Derek was an apex predator, and asserted that dominance over lesser animals such as dogs, cats, and deer to command them to do what he wanted.
  • Memory Ritual: Derek could have the potential ability to view the memories of another person by piercing the back of their neck with his claws and entering their mind.
  • Shapeshifting: Initially, Derek was able to transform in between only human and werewolf form.
    • Advanced Shapeshifting: Derek can transform between a human and a werewolf. However, in his mid-twenties, Derek was finally able to turn into a wolf similar to his mother Talia and older sister, Laura.
  • Alpha Powers: Being an Alpha-level werewolf, Derek had all the powers of the Alpha. After dying to save his son and his friends, Derek presumably regained all of the Alpha powers.
    • Power Granting: Being an Alpha, Derek could turn anyone into a shapeshifter, whether it is a bite, a scratch or water coming from a werewolf's paw print/puddle. He turned several people, such as Erica Reyes, Vernon Boyd and Isaac Lahey. When he bit Jackson, it turned him into a Kanima and initially made him reject the bite. However, he resolved his status as an orphan when Lydia Martin saved him. Later, Derek bit Victoria Argent, the last werewolf Derek unwittingly created. However, it failed with Gerard because he had unknowingly took fake cancer pills tat were capsules filled with mountain ash. It cured him of his cancer but he continued vomitting black blood.
    • Alpha Roar: The ability to use a roar to scare away supernatural creatures or force a were creature in or out of transformation. He used this roar against Isaac Lahey in order to stop him from attacking Stiles while the former succumbed to the full moon.
    • Healing Disruption: Derek could disrupt Omega and Beta-level werewolves' regenerative healing factor. Derek used this ability during a physical fight with Scott McCall, causing claw gashes on his abdomen that took several hours to fully heal.
    • Healing: As an Alpha Werewolf, Derek used to have the ability to perform a ritual to heal others, but at the cost of losing their Alpha Spark.

Abilities[]

  • Driving: Derek was able to drive at least three separate cars. Two of them were Camaros and one SUV. He had only trusted Scott McCall to drive his Camaro.
  • Intelligence: Derek possessed high level intelligence. He was a skilled mentor, as he successfully trained Scott McCall, Jackson Whittemore, Isaac Lahey, Erica Reyes, Vernon Boyd and Malia Tate on controlling and dominating certain aspects of their supernatural nature.
  • Supernatural Knowledge: He was able to identify a Kanima and could tell that Kira Yukimura was a Kitsune and immediately knew what a Wendigo was when Sheriff asked him about it. It also got him a job as a Supernatural consultant for the Beacon County Sheriff's Department in the future. He also knew how to communicate with his mother's spirit through a ritual and that Satomi Ito's Pack had the ability to disguise their scent from the Deadpool assassins.
  • Master Combatant: Derek's traditional fighting style involved a combination of his superhuman physical attributes, gymnastics and natural instincts, enabling him to survive battles against dangerous adversaries like the Alpha Pack members, particularly Kali, and the Oni. When he temporarily lost his powers in the fourth season, Braeden taught him formal close-quarters combat techniques, which he displayed in the form of accurate Karate style blocks, effective counter-attacks and even a headbutt against Deadpool assassins trying to kill Scott, Liam and Malia.
  • Expert Marksman: During his brief time without powers, Derek received firearms training from Braeden on the safe and effective use of a .22 caliber Sig Sauer pistol. He quickly learned the skills and used them to battle a squad of hunters-turned-assassins on the Deadpool hit-list.
  • Strong Willpower: Because of his shere force of will, Derek became an Alpha a second time without stealing the powers from another. He is also fiercely protective of his friends and family.
  • Intimidation: Derek used to use fear and intimidation so people could submit to him. When he was training Scott, he pretended to be the Alpha and scared him so he could survive. He would intimidate Stiles, such as into driving him to a place where he could get the wolfsbane out of him by threatening to kill him and he later scared Jackson to the point of him crying, which is something out of character for him.
  • Stealth: Derek was able to utilize stealth whenever he was being quiet. However, this mostly played, in part, to his werewolf attributes. He snuck into Scott's house a few times and snuck onto Jackson without him noticing it until a few minutes ago.

Weaknesses[]

  • Wolfsbane: Werewolves are inherently weak if exposed to wolfsbane or Wolfsbane bullet/weaponry to prevent the victim from healing. If he were to ingest it from a drink, Derek would see horrifical hallucinations. In Season 1, Derek nearly died after Kate Argent shot him with a rifle bullet filled with a rare strain of Nordic wolfsbane, and it was only after he treated it with the ashes of the same wolfsbane that he survived. Additionally, yellow can weaken or kill Derek. However, he can be saved if the wolfsbane is burned out of his system.
  • Mistletoe: As a canine were-creature, mistletoe is poisonous to Derek and other werewolves. He could get seriously ill as seen with Cora Hale and reaction would be a mixture of blood and vomit.
  • Mountain Ash: Derek cannot enter a barrier or leave a building made of mountain ash. However, Derek could use mountain ash against other supernatural creatures, showing it can be used for offense or defense. It is also capable of killing him, as seen when Sebastian Valet was killed by his sister with a weapon formed with mountain Ash and wolfsbane.
  • Electricity: Electricity temporarily renders Derek without his powers for a while. It is also one of the few things capable of wounding him or killing him. When he and Derek were being tortured by the Calavera family, the electrical fence surpassed his powers
  • Letharia vulpina: The plant is capable of weakening/suppress Derek's powers and shapeshifting abilities. Deaton injected a Nogitsune possessed Stiles, who had been attacking him.
  • Full Moon: The Full Moon enhances Werewolves powers. However, it will also enhance their aggression, which untrained werewolves succumb to anger, almost to the point of being homicidal. Due to being born a werewolf, Derek would rarely fall under its disastrous effects. However, under certain conditions, Derek is still capable of losing control during this time.
  • Lunar Eclipse: When a lunar eclipse occurs, Derek will be rendered powerless until the event is over.
  • Modified Canine Distemper Virus: A modified version of the Virus was created by The Chemist that would cause the werewolf or any canine were-creature to become sick and eventually they lose their sight before they are killed off.

In Season 6b, Derek takes another black Chevy Camaro from an abandoned warehouse. By this point, Chris Argent knew his friend so well, that Derek stole the car from Hunters who were using it. In the two-year flash forward he is seen to have possession of it.

While Peter was hospitalized, Derek and Laura left Beacon Hills for Southern California and Cora went to live with a South American werewolf pack.

Trivia[]

  • Derek was the first to acknowledge Scott was an Alpha in "Venomous," alluding to Scott's eventual ascension as an Alpha in Season 3.
  • Derek was temporarily a minor antagonist in the series, mainly in the first and second season. However, he never meant any will on anyone throughout the series, as he often protected Scott and Stiles despite threatening to kill them.
  • Technically Derek saw Scott's eyes turn from gold to red twice: first during the fight at the mall and second at the defeat of Jennifer Blake
  • Tyler Hoechlin left the show after season 4 to focus on hits movie career. There were also rumors going around that if Oakland hadn't left season 5 storyline was Derek would have involved him and return of Jennifer Blake. Even though this never came to be, the Anuk-ite still took the form of Jennifer Blake during the season 6 finale.
  • Derek and Paige's relationship is similar to the Scott and Allison romance being a human girl falling in love with a werewolf. Both the Paige/Derek and Scott/Allison ended in tragedy. Additionally, both Paige and Allison were Derek and Scott's first loves who were aware their boyfriends were Werewolves before the girls died in their arms.
  • Derek played basketball in high school, a reference to the sport Scott Howard played in the original film.
