The power isn't the burden, the burden is in how I use it... and I've been using it poorly lately.
―Danny to Pariah Dark

Danny Phantom (real name Daniel "Danny" Fenton) is the titular main protagonist of the Nickelodeon animated series, Danny Phantom. He was a human boy who turned into a ghost/human hybrid upon stepping in through the Fenton Portal while in his parents' laboratory. His molecular structure is fused and rearranged with ectoplasm. As a result, he can transform from human to ghost at will, and he has several supernatural abilities. He works with his sister Jazz and best friends Sam Manson and Tucker Foley, in stopping villainous ghosts, with the likes of Vlad Plasmius, Skulker and other ghosts and being hunted down by his own parents (who do not know that Danny Phantom and Danny Fenton are one and the same until the end of the series).

Danny is voiced by David Kaufman, who also voiced Marty McFly in the Back to the Future animated series.

Role in the Series

Background

Fenton family MM

Jazz and Danny having to grow up with ghost- obsessed parents

Daniel "Danny" Fenton was born in the June 14, 1990 to Maddie and Jack Fenton. He had one sibling, an older sister Jasmine, who was two years older than him. He and his family lived in Fenton Works, located in Amity Park. He had a a paternal grandfather well was mentioned once. Season 3 reveals that Danny and his family sans Maddie were descendants of John Fentonightingale, a witch hunter during the Salem witch trials in 1693. This would imply that hunting down supernatural creatures and having obsessions about them ran in the Fenton family. In "Prisoners of Love," it is revealed that Danny has a maternal aunt named Alicia, who has been divorced once and lives in a cabin located in Spittoon, Arizona, hating Danny's father. The identity of Danny's grandparents are unknown, but according to an aunt of his, intelligent women ran in Danny's maternal family. He was once close to Maddie when he was younger but he apart as he got older. Around this time, Danny also had a close relationship with Jazz, always ready to talk to her about everything. Growing up, Danny and his sister had to deal with his ghost-obsessed parents, which resulted in a strain in the family's relationships. He would grow irritated with Jack and Maddie, especially with their inventions and their annual debates about Santa Claus's existence. This dynamic would also cause Jazz to "parent" him, and, despite her good intentions, made it grow worse for Danny because of her coddling and overprotective nature. It is implied Jazz and Danny drifted further apart because she sometimes come off as arrogant and snobbish. It is revealed in the "Fright before Christmas" that Danny hates Christmas because of his bad childhood experiences with the holiday, especially his parents always had a debate concerning Santa Claus's existence. In the second he met Sam Manson and Tucker Foley, who have been his best friends since at least the second grade.

One month prior to the series, Danny's parents invented the Fenton portal that would let them have access to the Ghost Zone, another interdimensional world but it didn't work. He snuck Sam and Tucker into his parents' Lab, where Sam convinced him to try it out. With the portal, Danny turned it on, but it resulted in a lab accident as ectoplasm entered his body and rewrite his DNA, turning Danny into the world's second human/ghost hybrid or, a Halfa.

Season 1

At least one month after the accident, Danny was still adjusting to becoming a half-ghost but was unsure what to do with his powers. After he defeated the Lunch Lady Ghost with his ghost powers, Danny decided to use them for good by protecting Amity Park and fighting ghosts and returning them back into the Ghost Zone. Among his adversaries introduced in the season, is the Ghost Hunter Skulker, who obsessively hunts him down because of the rarity of human-ghost hybrids.

Season 2

Season 3

Personality

Danny Fenton looks like an average American teenager who is just trying to survive high school; however, underneath, is a superhero at heart due to his ghostly superpower. Initially having little to no confident in being half-ghost, Danny was unsure how to use his powers until he fought off the Lunch Lady Ghost. Since meeting Vlad Masters, the only halfa like him, Danny has learned to come on a high alert to his enemies following their deadly encounters. After the events of "The Ultimate Enemy," Danny learned to use his powers more responsibly to ensure that he never becomes his future self that he encountered from the dark future.

Danny and Jazz Phantom Planet 2

Jazz and Danny Fenton, siblings with a strong bond

Overall, Danny is a friendly and caring teenager who loves his friends, family and city. He is also a good brother to Jazz and Danielle. Concerning his and Jazz's relationship on the matter, Danny feels distanced from his older sister due to her acting more like a mother than a sibling and overall treating him like a defenseless child in need of guidance. However, after Jazz learned Danny was half ghost and was using his powers responsibly, Jazz and Danny mended their previously broken relationship. Danny also grows protective of both his sisters. When Jazz went to date Johnny 13, a ghost boy using her for his girlfriend Kitty to possess, Danny spied on him and fought him, later warning Johnny to stay away from his sister before sucking him into one of the Fenton thermos. He also went to protect Dani from Vlad, even threatening the man to stay away from Danielle or he would come after him if he laid one finger on her. These experiences showed a responsible sibling side to Danny, as his protectiveness and responsibility over a younger sibling mirrors Jazz relationship with Danny herself. Being a hero, Danny is willing to put aside his differences aside to even help an enemy, as he did with Plasmius against the Fright Knight and Pariah's soldiers and saving Skulker from rabid and deadly unicorn ghosts.

Danny and Sam (33)

Danny's and Sam's relationship finally came together in the finale

In addition to his kind and friendly nature, Danny has had four love interests in the series. His first one was Paulina Sanchez, a popular girl in high school. However, she disliked Danny Fenton but absolutely adores him as Danny Phantom, but mostly due to his looks than his heroics. In later episodes, the crush is more one-sided due to Danny growing more feelings for Sam., who is his main love interest in the series. While he does get frustrated whenever someone assumes they are dating, Danny does get jealous when she began dating a new guy, supposedly named Gregor, going as far as to spy on them. Sam has also acted this way whenever he turns his attention to his crush on Paulina, and later Valerie, who Danny briefly dated. At first enemies because Valerie hated Danny Phantom, when Danny got to know what kind a person Valerie truly was, a hard-working girl looking out for her father, he began to consider her a friend. They dated briefly in "Flirting with Disaster," but Valerie broke up with him to continue her secret ghost fighting career. His fourth and final love interest was Ember McLain because in the ten years following Phantom Planet, she had grown a not so secret crush on him, despite Ember violently denying it. However, the Ghost girl has shaved his insignia in her hair and placed his logo on her guitar. Of the four, Sam was the only one who liked Danny's human and ghost sides, Paulina just likes his ghost sides and Valerie only likes his human side. However, of all the four, only Valerie and Sam had shown genuine interest in him.

Physical appearance

As Fenton

Danny Fenton Render (4)

Danny's human self.

Danny is a fourteen-year old boy who is a bit on the "nerdy" side of high school. In his human form, he has shaggy black hair, light blue eyes, and light skin. Danny appears to have his mother's facial structures but he inherited his father's hair and eyes. He sports on a white T-shirt with a red circle insignia and red collar, blue jeans, and red/white Converse shoes.

As Phantom

Danny Phantom Render (1)

As Phantom, Danny's black hair turns white and his blue eyes turn to a glowing neon green. His clothes change into a black hazmat suit with a white collar, and matching belt and gloves. Season 1 is the only part in the series he never once wore his superhero's insignia. As of Season 2, Sam designed a superhero insignia for Danny, putting it on his chest. It is a giant white "D" insignia with a black "P" inside, showing his initials. He is more built as Phantom, having slightly broader shoulders, muscular and arms and a wider chest. Between these small changes, people fail to recognize that Fenton and Phantom are one and the same despite both identities look almost the same sans the hair color, eye color and clothing. He also had a faint white aura around him. When Danny is using his ice powers, his white aura turns light blue and his eyes turn the same pale blue color, devoid of any photo or sclera, similar to how Vlad's red eyes look most of the time.

Powers and Abilities

Ghost Powers

Danny COTW (41)

Danny's ghost powers

Ghost/Human Physiology: After being bombarded with ectoplasmic energy, Danny's human DNA merged with ghost DNA and effectively turned into the second human-ghost hybrid after Vlad. Having little to no control of his powers at the start of the series, Danny is becoming more powerful and his powers are advancing. Ten years after the series, he also developed abilities that are so destructive, such as the Void, he only uses it when he seems them necessary to use.

  • Transformation/Going Ghost: Danny has the ability to transform between his human and ghost halves. When he changes into a ghost, his black hair becomes white and his blue eyes turn a glowing green, and whatever clothes he is wearing immediately turns into his hazmat suit. He can also turn parts of his body into ghost; as sometimes his eyes flash green whenever he is angry. Danny turned his chin invisible so Dash could not punch him in Reign Storm.
  • Invisibility/Intangibility: Danny can turn any part of his body invisible. When he holds onto someone, he can make his companion(s) turn invisible as well. Danny, while invisible, has the ability to fly through walls, which he can extend through with whoever or whatever he touches.
  • Danny ice powers

    Danny's cryokinesis

cryokinesis: Unlike Plasmius, Danny developed ice and snow abilities that did not fully develop until Season 3. Before his powers grew and he became more advanced, Danny's cryokinesis did not fully develop until Season 3. In the beginning, Danny's cryokinesis powers manifested in the form of his Ghost Sense, a subdivision of the ice powers. Sometime after meeting Frostbite, Danny's ice and snow abilities advanced. However, as his ice powers were manifesting, the least Danny could do was feeling cold and suffering from violent chills. After escaping into the Ghost Zone and being found by Frostbite, Danny learned that his ghost sense was a sup-power of his cryokinesis and his ability was advancing. After Frostbite trained Danny, the ghost boy managed to master his ice powers; however, when he first started out, he began freezing some of Frostbite's people as they were watching. Danny was able to have complete control over it when he fought off Undergrowth as he took over Amity Park.
    • Ghost Sense: Whenever a ghost is nearby, blue mist escaped from Danny's mouth and a chill goes down his spine. The Ghost Sense is a sub-power of his cryokinesis. However, it is unknown if he is able to sense half-ghosts like Plasmius or his sister and clone, Dani in either their ghost or human forms.
  • Ghostly Wail: Unlike Plasmius, Danny developed a powerful sonic scream in "The Ultimate Enemy," an episode in Season 2, and one of his primary abilities. He can scream ultra-waves of ectoplasm and almost nothing human or ghost can withstand it. Around the first few times, the move can drain Danny's complete power and revert him back into his human form because he developed this power ten years earlier than his dark future counterpart. However, after gaining his powers, the Ghostly Wail was the first ability he demonstrated and no longer took energy out of him.
  • Void: One of his powers ten years after his half-ghost creation, Danny is able to absorb all visible light within a surrounding area, leaving nothing but absolute darkness for which no one can see through, except him. This ability, while being the most powerful, is highly destructive to not only those around Danny, but also to himself. Void takes a heavy toll on Danny’s mental state, due to the power being derived from negative emotions such as anger and hatred. This has caused him to only use it as a last resort. Void is a special and destructive that only Danny knows how to use.
  • Overshadowing: Danny is able to take control of the mind and body of a human being. He was also able to possess Jack for longer periods of time, despite his father's reputation of being able to resist Vlad's mind-control me. For a brief time, he overshadowed Plasmius to try and tarnish Vlad's reputation. The extent of overshadowing that Danny possesses expands as the series progresses.
    • Voice Manipulation: Whenever he is overshadowing someone, Danny can sounds like the person he is possessing. However, his voice still sounds the same to the audience just so people know it is Danny speaking and not the person he is overshadowing. As, when he saved Maddie from falling in "Bitter Reunions", Maddie didn't note that Danny was possessing Jack and thought she was speaking to her husband.
    • Exorcism: Danny can forcefully remove a ghost from an individual, location or artifact they overshadowed and free said person from the ghost's control. Danny uses his some of his parents' inventions to force a ghost out of a person or object. Through use of a Fenton thermos in Attack of the Killer Garage Sale," he forced Technus out of his battlesuit and often uses the Fenton Ghost Catcher to separate Tucker Phantom from his best friend Tucker Foley and once split himself between Super Danny and Fun Danny to ease his difficult life as a superhero and a regular kid. However Danny can use this power naturally, which was first seen in the episode "What You Want", when he tore the ghosts created by Desiree out of Dash and Paulina by using using his intangibility and his newly discovered Ghost Ray abilities respectively. He seems to have mastered it by "Bitter Reunions" because he easily exorcized Vlad from his father, Jack. In "Public Enemies," combined with the Ghost werewolf Wulf, both he and Danny teamed up to pull Walker and his goons out of the citizens of Amity Park.  He can also do it to himself which was seen in the episode "Kindred Spirits." After being kidnapped by Plasmius and Danielle, Vlad needed to obtain his arch-enemy's mid-morph DNA to create the perfect clone but Danny refused to transform. A small green glob of one of Danny's failed clones attempted to overshadow the boy and coerce him to transform into Phantom. However, the boy was able to resist; because of the amount of power Danny unleashed, it forced the Ghost out and also destroyed both the clone the spectral energy neutralizer while throwing both Danny and the clone on the other side of the room.
    • Dream Invasion: Danny can invade people's dreams when he possesses someone. He first displayed this ability by entering the dreams of Sam, Tucker and Jazz because he got shocked by Nocturne's sleep-inducement helmets while trying to remove them from his sister and their friends' heads. Danny was able to disrupt their fantasies by creating an absurd detail in their dream sequence to shock them awake, and destroy the sleep helmets in the process. When he went to Tucker, Danny replaced one of the Stars his best friend was dreaming of and showing distaste of being the janitor in Tucker's dream. Upon seeing Danny instead of one of the Star clones, Tucker immediately woke up. This followed by Sam when he entered her dreams and saw she was sharing the same one he had. He woke Sam up by pretending to be Dash in the dream to transform into phantom, which greatly disturbed her and shocked her awake. It is unknown how Danny woke Jazz up from the dream of her attending college, but it is implied he gave the impression she was married to Dash, which made her wake up.
  • Supernatural Agility: Due to his smaller stature and young age due to being half-ghost, Danny is far more agile than most people. He is usually able to avoid a stronger opponent’s blow, as he did when Dash tried to punch him in “Reign Storm,” Danny was able to duck in the nickof time.
  • Supernatural Durability: Danny can withstand/resist harsh impacts while only sustaining small injuries in the process of a conflict. This even includes bouncing back quickly despite harsh impacts, including punches from his enemies, being hit by energy blasts or being slammed into a wall from a building.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: During his fights with ghosts, Danny sustains several hits and injuries and he bleeds ectoplasm when he is hurt but it is usually aids in his healing. After his scuffle with Vlad in “Bitter Reunions,” Danny was badly bruised but by the next few hours, he was already healed
  • Supernatural Strength: In his ghost form, Danny has incredible strength that is greater than the average human. Despite not being as strong as Vlad or Dan, Danny is still able to lift heavy objects and carry both Sam and Tucker simultaneously. He is also able to carry Jazz despite her being taller than him, which he did in “My Brother’s Keeper” and “Secret Weapons”. He was also able to swing Sam when she was in dragon form when using the Amulet of Dorathea. Danny was also able to fight Aragon for a time when he was in Dragon form and threw him into a lake. He also hurls heavy objects at his enemies during a fight and singlehandedly saved a school bus before his fiasco with Amorpho.

Abilities

  • Danny FIghting Ember

Danny holding himself against Ember relatively well

High Acrobatic Skills: Due to being well fit, Danny has extremely powerful acrobatic skills. This is a trait he shares with his mother Maddie and his sisters Jazz and Danielle.
  • Fast/Quick Learning: Danny developed a plethora of powers and abilities that he learned how to control himself with relative ease. Even after a month after the accident, Danny learned how to control his ghost powers. In "Maternal Instincts," it is seen that Danny trained himself how to use ghost powers. When he was taught how to use his ice powers by Frostbite, Danny struggled with them at first, even freezing the people of the Far Frozen. During a battle with Undergrowth, Danny gained the upper hand. He used his ice powers, using the villain's weakness for the cold to Danny's advantage.
  • Aviation: Danny can pilot a submarine in a hurry in the episode "The Fenton Menace", and easily drive the Fenton RV. He can pilot the Spector Speeder in the Ghost Zone, which is seen in the episode "Beauty Marked," when Danny flew the ship into the Ghost Zone to rescue Sam. He piloted the ship at incredible speeds when he was capturing ghosts to help him save the Ghost Zone and the Earth He rarely takes the speeder for individual trips into the Ghost Zone.
  • Indomitable Will:
  • Skilled Tactician/Strategist: As the leader of his team, Danny Phantom comes up with battle strategies on the spot. Danny makes the plans with his friends, who are able to follow him in missions. When his sister, Jasmine, first joined the team, she accidentally messed up her brother's plans.
  • Skilled/Experienced Combatant: Danny is skilled when is comes to fighting, especially when it comes to his enemies. He inherited these skills from his parents and Jazz, who also are experienced fighters themselves.
  • Swordsmanship: Danny handled the sword of the Fright Knight rather well, using his own sword to fight the knight.
  • High-level intelligence:
  • Leadership:
  • Multilingual Skill:
  • Fenton Weaponry Expertise: After a while, Danny used this skill on a daily level, resulting in him becoming proficient with his parents' weapons. at first, Danny struggled with some gadgets, such as having trouble with his father's Fenton Thermos in "Mystery Meat." However, Danny made it work in under a minute during his first fight with the Lunch Lady Ghost. He also knows to use the Fenton Phones, giving them to Sam so she would be able to resist ghost powers with them

Trivia

  • By the events of the series, Danny is fourteen years old and had his powers at least a month prior to the accident. (Mystery Meat).
  • Danny was a certified Junior astronaut. ("Kindred Spirits").
  • Danny has had four love interests: Sam Manson, Paulina Sanchez, Valerie Gray and Ember McLainKitty doesn't count because she only used Danny.
    • Kitty doesn't count because she was only using him to get back at Johnny for looking at other girls.
    • Another girl from "Flirting with Disaster" wondered if Danny liked brunettes, showing she had an interest in Danny as well.
    • Other ladies flirted with Danny in "Beauty Marked" in order to get his vote for the beauty pageant hosted by Dorathea in her human disguise.
  • It is heavily implied that Danny's powers are linked to his emotions, as his ghost ray activated against Desiree. This is more evident, given that when Danny had atmokinetic abilities, as the weather would change based on his emotions. (Torrent of Terror)
  • Danny cameoed in an episode of The Fairly OddParents, where he is seen on a computer screen in the lab of Mr. and Mrs. Turner in the episode "Poltergeeks."
  • He is the world's second human/ghost hybrid. His archenemy, Vlad Plasmius, is the first and his sister, Dani Phantom, is the third. (Bitter Reunions, Kindred Spirits). However, of the three, Dani is the only one who is a clone.
  • In the "Danny Phantom: The Next Generation" video, Danny and Sam would eventually get married and ha haved two children, Jackson and Misty. Being a quarter ghost, Jackson and Misty inherited their dad's ghost abilities. However, Danny's children are able to teleport on their own and can transport between the human world and the Ghost Zone nearly similar to Wulf, who also can access the Ghost Zone via his claws.
  • S01e06 Danny escaping Tucker Phantom
Danny seemly has the ability to vanish and instantly reappear in another place nearby. Although unconfirmed, it is suggested that this could possible be teleportation or his could simply be him moving while invisible, though this is atypical for the show's animation, as the audience is normally able to see him while he is invisible. His act of teleportation is making his body become slightly disfigured then fading away and appearing in another place. Danny has used this during his battle with Tucker Phantom in "What You Want?" and a reality-warping Freakshow in "Reality Trip." In "The Next Generation" video, according to Butch Hartman, Danny did not have teleportation and it is actually an ability that his children have. So Danny may have an ability similar to Teleportation or a form of this ability at his advantage.
  • Danny used to hate Christmas because of his parents' argument of Santa Claus being real or not.
    • However, after saving Christmas and being trapped in Ghost Writer's story, he has come to accept the fact that his parents' annual arguments about Santa Claus's existence are part of their Christmas tradition.(The Fright Before Christmas)

Behind the Scenes

  • Originally, Danny was going to have a pet owl named Spooky; however, the idea was dropped because the creators realized that there was already Harry Potter, another protagonist who had a pet owl named Hedwig.
  • Instead of having black hair, Danny had blond hair. However, in the TV series, the idea is alluded to in "Livin' Large" when Danny is briefly riding Johnny 13's motorcycle.
  • Danny's name was originally going to be Jackie, named after actor Jackie Chan. Davie, Kenny and Billy were other names taken under consideration.
  • Unlike the show, where Danny is half-human/half-ghost, he was a full human who had to rely on gadgets to fight ghosts. Instead, Hartman decided to give Danny superpowers.
    • Additionally, Danny had a motorcycle in the original pitch of the series, but the idea was dropped once Hartman gave Danny superpowers.
  • He and Sam were going to have a telepathic connection. However, the idea was dropped because Hartman believed that was too much for a kids' show that was just starting. However, this idea isn't completely abandoned because it is alluded to is in the episode frightmare where she and Danny shared the same dream
