The Crystal Bats, also known as xahgniathanor, are artificial creatures created by the Skeksis for them to spy on all corners of Thra. They are supporting antagonists of the 1982 film The Dark Crystal.
Background[]
The Crystal Bats were created by the Skeksis during the Garthim War. They carried spy crystals in their talons, which would send images of whatever they saw back to the Castle of the Crystal. Crystal Bats worked in conjunction with the Garthim, tracking down Gelflings and alerting the former to their location.
Role in the film[]
In the film, the Skeksis dispatch the Crystal Bats to search for Jen, the gelfling survivor of the Garthim War. One of them finds his, alone with another Gelfling survivor Kira and her pet, Fizzgig. However, Kira knocked it out of the Sky. However they remained unaware that it had survived and sent an image of Jen and Kira to the Dark Crystal for the Skeksis.
