Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall Fraser, simply known as Claire Fraser, nicknamed Sassenach by Jamie Fraser, (born 18 October 1918) is the titular main protagonist of the Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon and the Starz television adaptation of the same name. She is the widow of Frank Randall, the wife of Jamie Fraser and the mother of Brianna MacKenzie. Claire is a time traveler who h was a combat Nurse in the second World War and finds herself transported to 1743 after touching the standing stones of Craigh na Dun. There, Claire meets and falls in love with James "Jamie" Fraser, a Scotsman who she eventually marries. Throughout the books, their love and bond is tested and never broken from obstacles along the way.


In the series, Claire is portrayed by Caitriona Balfe, who also voices Tavra in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Background[]

Claire was born ‎October 20, 1918 in London, England. When she was a child, Claire's parents were killed in a car crash and she was left under the care of her uncle, Quentin Lambert Beauchamp. She had very little memories of her parents but remembered songs her mother would sing to her. Claire learned more about her parents from Uncle Lamb; however, she did not go to boarding school like most of the girls

Physical Appearance[]

At the beginning of the series, Claire is twenty-seven years old and turns twenty-eight by the end of the novel. She is currently in her early 60s. She has curly, light brown hair, fair skin and light brown eyes that nearly look golden. However, by the third book, Claire is in her early fifties and has gained grey streaks in her hair. Claire's Uncle Lamb told her that her mother's eyes had been the same color.

Family[]

Claire is a member of the Beauchamp family, Randall family and Fraser family by marriage.

Her grandfather, David Beauchamp married Angela Bell Beauchamp (Deceased). They had two sons: Henry and Quentin. Henry married Julia Moriston, Claire's mother, whose parents are unknown. Her father, Henry, had a brother named Quentin, who adopted Claire after her father and mother were killed in a crash. She was an only child and had no siblings.

Frank Randall[]

She married Frank Randall. They were unable to have children because of her husband's inability to produce children. Instead, they raised her and Jamie's daughter Brianna, but their relationship was never the same because Claire still loved Jamie.

Jamie Fraser[]

While in 1740s Scottland, Claire married James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser to protect her from Jack Black Randall. They had a daughter together, but she was a stillborn named Faith. They had a second child, named "Brianna." Brianna married Roger MacKenzie Wakefield and they had two children: a son named Jem and a daughter named Amanda. They adopted a son, re-naming him from Claudel to Fergus.

Lord John Gray[]

In the fourth book, Claire has to take care of John despite feeling envious of his affections for Jamie. In the seventh book, Claire briefly married Lord John Grey, who married her to protect her from being arrested for espionage and a last service to Jamie (because they both thought he was dead). However,  their marriage was invalid when her husband returned. and turned out to be alive. 

Trivia[]

  • Claire is the only character to have a first-person narration in all the novels.
  • Jamie calls her "Sassenach," which means "Outlander" or "Englishman" in Gaelic. While it is a derogatory term, it is, instead, an affectionate nickname for her.
  • By Go Tell The Bees I Am Gone, Claire is in her mid-60s.
