Chance is the main protagonist of the Homeward Bound duology, serving as the deuteragonist of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and the protagonist of its 1996 sequel, Homeward Bound: Lost in San Francisco.
He is an American bulldog who was once a stray until he was sent to the pound or what he calls, "the bad place" until he was adopted by Jamie Seaver. No matter how many times he is separated from the family on two occasions, Chance and his friends Shadow and Sassy have always find their way back home.
The pranks Chance pulled on Sassy at the beginning of the original film and the sequel were how he defeated three of the villains from the series.
In the first film, he catapults Sassy into the sandbox using the seesaw at the beginning of the film. Later in the film, he defeats the mountain lion by launching it off a slab of rock into a lake below like a seesaw.
In the beginning of the second film, Chance rolls the Sassy and the plastic crawl tunnel from the playground to the driveway. Later in the film, at the construction site, Chance lures Pete and Ashcan into one of the pipes and rolling it down the construction site.
Chance escaping his cage in the sequel made him launch a chain of events that drove the main plot of the film.
