Cate Randa is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Kentaro Randa) of the Apple+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. She is the daughter of Hiroshi and Caroline Randa, the stepdaughter of Emiko Randa, the paternal half-sister of Kentaro Randa, and the granddaughter of Keiko and Bill Randa. Before the series, she was a science teacher and secretly dating two women, her former colleague Dani and lover Evin at the same time. However, on G-Day, Cate lost most of her students under her care, developing PTSD and a fear of Godzilla. Her search for her missing father leads her to uncover his involvement with Monarch, family secrets and that there is more to Godzilla that meets the eye.

In 2017, Keiko, Cate, and May finally make it to the surface, reaching an Apex facility on Skull Island. Cate reunited with her brother and had a tense four-year reunion with Hiroshi. Due to the time dilation of the Hollow Earth, Cate and her companions emerge to the same ages they were the day they all fell into it. Cate, her family, and friends evacuate as Kong approaches.

Personality[]

Cate is a quick-witted young woman whose life is changed forever when she witnesses Godzilla attacking San Francisco in 2014. This event traumatizes her and she suffers from PTSD. She also greatly resembles her paternal grandmother in terms of personality and appearance.

Kentaro Randa[]

Relationship Status: Paternal Half-Siblings · First Met: 2015, Japan ("Aftermath")

Cate was initially uncertain on what to think of her paternal half-brother Kentaro. However, they grew to care for one another and realized they had more in common then they thought and eventually come to care and love each other. They both share a deep resentment towards their father for having two families and keeping them separated from each other.

After Cate's supposed demise, Kentaro blames his father for his sister's death. However upon reuniting he is happy to see her.

Keiko Randa[]

Relationship Status: Paternal Grandmother and Granddaughter · First Met: 2015 (Axis Mundi)

When Lee Shaw met Cate, he noted the similarities between her and her grandmother, his beloved Keiko. Like everyone else, Cate was unaware that her grandmother was still alive and Fighting for life in the Hollow Earth. When Cate is attacked by a Bramble Boar, she is rescued by an unaged Keiko but doesn't reveal their relationship.

Keiko is devastated to learn that decades have passed, and that Bill never returned from his expedition to Skull Island but thrilled to learn that Cate, the girl she rescued, was her granddaughter. Spending the next two years in the Hollow Earth, Keiko, May and Cate unknowingly spend it. When they emerge from the hollow Earth, it is 2017.

Hiro Randa[]

Relationship Status: Father and Daughter · First Met: Since Cate's birth

Hiroshi inadvertently created a strained relationship with Cate, similar to how he and his stepfather, Bill was. She would sometimes find her father's acts suspicious, which was fitting enough since he was secretly married to another woman with another child. The last time Cate saw her dad was the aftermath of G-Day, where he made sure her and her mother were taken care of. This would be the last time Cate and Hiro saw each other, for his plane supposedly created during an expedited to Alaska. She went to settle her father's affairs in Tokyo, where she was shocked to learn that she had a half-brother and stepmother.

Caroline Randa[]

Relationship Status: Mother and Daughter · First Met: Since Cate's birth

After the events of G-Day, Caroline and Cate reunited amongst the survivors but their last time with Hiroshi was him saying goodbye.

Due to Hiro's disappearance, the two Randa women entered a strained relationship. Caroline tried reconnecting with Cate, even helping her deal with her anxiety and panic attacks. However Cate, who was grieving for her father's disappearance and suffering the loss of her students, closed herself off from her mother. In "Aftermath," Caroline called Cate, trying to convince her to not leave and not to hang up on her. However, Cate hangs up on her mother and gets on the plane.

Emiko Randa[]

Relationship Status: Stepmother/Stepdaughter · First Met: 2015 (Aftermath)

Cate and Emiko were unaware of each other due to Hiroshi having a double life, and having two families. Instead of the typical stepparent-stepchild relationship, Emiko doesn't harbor a grudge against Cate due to her kind personality, Even comforting her stepdaughter during one of her panic attacks.

Instead, she directs her anger towards Hiroshi for lying to her and Kentaro.

When Cate, May and Lee disappeared falling into the Hollow Earth, Emiko encouraged Kentaro to never give up and keep looking for his sister and their friends.

May Olowe-Hewitt[]

Monarch Legacy of Mars - 1x10 - Cate and May unite

Relationship Status: Close Friends and Teammates · First Met: 2015 (Aftermath)

May at first wanted nothing to do with Kentaro or Cate at first. Overtime, May and Cate became find of reach other. However, their relationship becomes stained when Cate and Kentaro learn that May was secretly consulting with Monarch and showing them to teach them. In "Will the Real May Please Stand Up?" Cate learns that May is really named Corah Mateo and that she was on the run after May learned that her boss was misusing her program coding. Learning that May was kidnapped, Cate and Kentaro trigger a false Titan alert to rescue May from AET, but she chooses not to spy on Monarch and stay behind. She later helps secure her friend's release by making a deal with Verdugo: help them save May in exchange for information about Lee's plans.

There are also several hints and ship tease that they have developed romantic feelings for each other. Afterwards, Cate and Kentaro reconcile with May even though she was secretly helping Duvall and Monarch keep track on them. She jokingly asks if may prefers Corah or May with May preferring the latter. As they drive, Cate slips her hand into May's, causing Kentaro to roll his eyes in annoyance.

Upon being reunited in the Hollow Earth, Cate and May hug and hold each other's hands as they evacuate on a helicopter.


Dani[]

Dani is Cate's former colleague and ex-girlfriend. Although they deeply cared for one another, Cate became uncertain of truly continuing to the relationship when Dani asked her to start living in the same place together. On the day the Titans were converging on San Francisco, Cate realized that she could not become a committing partner and ended her relationship with Dani.

Evin[]

Evin was Cate's lover, but it is unknown whether they started seeing each other before or after the latter entered a relationship with Dani.

Godzilla[]

During the events of Godzilla, Cate was one of the many surviving victims of G-Day when Godzilla was fighting up against the 2 Mutos, he unintentionally killed the bus full of her students under Cate's supervision, causing her PTSD to develop as well as straining her relationship with both her mother Caroline. She, in part, blamed the great Titan for her troubles since that day and her father's disappearance. However, throughout Season One, Kate eventually comes to see Godzilla as a guardian and protector rather than a menace and is one of the few people who treats him as a sentient being. During the series 1 finale, Cate was awed by the sight of a very much alive Godzilla coming to save her and her companions. The two of them both locked eyes at each other, and it appeared to have finally reached a mutual understanding.

Lee Shaw[]

Relationship Status: Allies and Former Enemies - Ended · First Met: 2015

Shaw and Cate first met when she was searching for her missing father Hiroshi. During shared adventures, Shaw noticed the strong resemblance between her and her grandmother Keiko, a woman he also had feelings for. It is heavily speculated that his adventure with Keiko's grandchildren reminds him of the good times he had with Keiko and Bill Randa. Despite his somewhat misguided but justified plan to seal the Hollow Earth and prevent another tragedy like G-Day, Shaw on some level still cared about Cate and May and succeeded in saving her from falling when he failed to save Keiko.
