Look, I've heard it before. That humans can't do magic, that it's not my destiny, but I know the Sky Arcanum. And with that army coming here, I'm going to need to learn all the magic I possibly can.
~ Callum's speech to Ibis
You won't have anywhere to go. No vessel to control. You'll be trapped again, forever. That's the destiny I choose. The one I write for myself!
~ Callum to Aaravos[2]

Ezran, the boyfriend of Rayla, the nephew of Amaya and Janai, the step-grandson of the late King Atticus. He is also the the nephew-in-law of the late Karim and the late Khessa, the co-owner of Bait and the Baitling Sneezles, a surrogate brother of Azymondias, one of the best friends/younger brother figure of Soren, the arch-enemy of the Startouch Elf Aaravos and the former crush-turned rival of Claudia.

In Book Three, he begins a relationship with Rayla. However, by the time of Book 4, he has grown distant from Rayla after she we've on a quest of her own to hunting down Viren. They later rekindle their relationship in Book 6: Stars which continues onto them into adulthood. Two years later, he regrouped with his friends to embark on a new quest to defeat the Startouch Elf, Aaravos.

He is voiced by Jack DeSena, who also voiced Sokka in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Biography

Main article: Callum/Synopsis

Personality

For as long as he could remember, Callum had little confidence in everything a prince was supposed to be good at like sword fighting and horseback riding. However, he did begin feeling his worth when he performed magic for the first time during his, Ezran and Rayla's escape from the castle. Callum's affinity for magic was so strong, that he became the first human to ever connect to one of the Primal Sources despite not being born with one.

However, Callum's obsession with magic can be strong, up to a point where he keeps trying to find information about the Looking Glass and is tempted to destroy the Key of Aaravos but ultimately chooses not to. People like Soren warn Callum that he may love magic but he must be careful because he could go down a dark path like Claudia and Viren. Even two years since he used dark magic to save Rayla and Pyrrah, Callum is still disgusted by dark magic's nature and capabilities. Unfortunately, his small exposure to dark magic makes him an easy target for the Startouched elf Aaravos, who often targeted Mages like Callum. After Aaravos' was able to possess and control Callum's actions, the young were, in his terms, traumatized by this encounter.

He felt dangerous and out of control, fearing that Aaravos would try and possess him again. This fear is so strong he even asks Rayla to kill him Aaravos controlled him again. However, Callum's greatest fear is that Aaravos won't hurt him but the people he cares about. After he resorted to dark magic during his and his friends' captivity aboard the Sea Legs, Callum was disgusted with what he had done so much that he kept it a secret from Rayla and his friends. Unfortunately, the exposure to dark magic still makes Callum more susceptible to falling under Aaravos' control.

Physical appearance

Callum is a young teenage boy with brown hair, green eyes, and fair skin.

At the start of the series, Callum is only fourteen before turning fifteen in Book 2; in the time jump, he is seventeen years old.

Weaknesses

  • Dark Magic Usage: When Callum learned dark magic for the first time, the energy took a toll on his body, thus weakening him. He suffered from nightmarish dreams, hallucinations, and terrible visions. However, a vision of his late mother comforting him and Rayla crying his name causes him to snap out of it. Callum fears dark magic so much that he fears he will go down a dark path similar to Viren.
  • Possession: Becoming exposed to dark magic also allowed Aaravos to take control of Callum, using him as a conduit so he can mock his enemies, Team Zym. Callum fears that it could get worse if he continues using dark magic and that Aaravos will make him hurt his loved ones to get to him. According to Aaravos that if Callum completed one more magic spell he would be able to completely take over his body, making him a mortal vessel.

Equipment

  • Key of Aaravos: Callum first possessed the key when he found the cube at the Banther Lodge. Whenever he held it up against something with magic in it, the arcanum's symbol would light up on that side. Callum continuously used the Key as if it was pointing to something. He would eventually figure out that the Key was pointing to Elarion, as if there is something in the city drawing it to him. The true Key's purpose has not been revealed yet.
  • Ocean Amulet: Akiyu gifted Callum with an amulet that gives the wearer the ability to breathe underwater.
  • Sky Staff: After Ibis' death, Callum inherited his friend's staff, presumably out of Zubeia's blessing. The staff has a sky primal stone in it and helps amplify Callum's sky magic. It is currently unknown what happened to the Sky Staff but is presumably still in Callum's possession.
  • Sketchbook: Callum owned a sketchbook he used that kept various drawings, including ones of his mother and family portraits.
  • Spellbook: No longer using a sketchbook, Callum uses a spell book that keeps his personal notes on magic, as well as profiles on people he is close to.
  • Relic Staff: After Claudia abandoned the staff, Callum took it and was going to use it to trap Aaravos's soul in the coin.
  • Viren's Coin: When they were at the moon nexus, Callum needed the coin that used to hold Runaan's spirit inside. Once he freed Runaan from the coin, it was completely blank. In the final showdown with Aaravos, Callum proclaimed he was going to trap him in this coin and required Runaan to kill him after the spell was completed. However, Callum was unable to complete it due to the Archdragons' intervention.
  • Quasar Diamond: Callum used a Quasar Diamond to restore Runaan's body and free him from the coin Viren trapped him in.

Quotes

Rayla, you're the most amazing person I’ve ever met.
―Callum to Rayla
It’s because Rayla is a hero. Rayla saves people. She’s brave. She does what’s right, even if it puts her own life in danger and even when the odds seem impossible. Even when it means her people might misunderstand and turn against her. Rayla is selfless, strong, and caring. That’s what makes her a hero. That’s what makes her…Rayla. You are so…
―Callum to Nyx on Rayla
Soren: "These are big doors, but we just have to push them open. We can do this!"
Callum: "It takes two giants to open these, there's no way we can--"
Soren: "Never give up! At times like this, the only strength that matters is the strength in your heart."
―Soren telling Callum to not give up on pushing the gate to Umber Tor.

Trivia

  • Some sources state that Callum is Harrow's adopted son while the characters in the series call him his stepson instead.
  • His darker counterparts include Claudia and Lord Viren.
    • He and Claudia are mages and quite talented with magic.
      • However, Claudia revels in dark magic but Callum hates it.
      • "They both lost their mothers, are heavily devoted to their families, and will do anything to save them.
        • Claudia becomes desperate to keep her father alive and Callum resorts to dark magic to save Rayla twice).
        • Unfortunately, while Claudia starts falling apart and loses her family and friends, Callum's friends and family keep him together.
      • They also fall in love with two elves, Rayla and Terry.
      • They both have brothers but their dynamics are reversed.
        • Claudia is Soren's younger sister and Callum is Ezran's older brother.
        • Additionally, Callum remains loyal to his brother while Claudia, on the other hand, ends up betraying and denouncing Soren.
    • He and Aaravos could be considered opposites as well.
  • Both Callum and his adopted father, Harrow harbored a deep resentment for Avizandum due to his role in killing Callum's biological mother, Queen Sarai. Unlike his stepfather, however, Callum never gives in to it. This is, in part, due to Harrow acknowledging the lessons of love and forgiveness in his final letter to Callum. Instead, he expresses deep remorse that due to his friendship with Azymondias, his father was taken away from him.
  • Callum used dark magic for the first time when he was saving Rayla and a downed dragon from Claudia and Soren. He later resorted to dark magic again so he could save Rayla and the rest of his friends.
  • So far, Callum has connected to two of the seven arcaniums, the Sky and the ocean. He also did two spells in Moon magic.
  • it is quite ironic how Callum is a talented drawer and artist. This is the opposite of Jack DeSena's character, Sokka, who was a terrible artist.
  • Callum is, by far, the first human mage to ever connect with one of the Primal Sources of Magic in a long time.
  • One of Callum's fears is using dark magic and becoming a monster like Viren or Aaravos. Even though he is cleansed of dark magic, Kosmo warns Callum if he uses dark magic again the he will overwhelm himself.
  • In the teaser trailer for season 6, Callum tries flying up towards the stars with his spell created wings but ends up falling. This is similar to the Greek myth, Icarus who used his artificial wings and flew too close to the Sun. In a way, Callum's falling scene does mirror Icarus's story since the Sun is a yellow star.
  • So far, Callum has dabbled in 4 of the Primal Sources: Sky, Moon, Star and Ocean
  • In the franchise Callum has only been absent for one episode in the entire series' run, making him the character with the most number of appearances.
