Lord Bayard of Mercia is a character on BBC's Merlin. He was the King of the kingdom of Mercia. His kingdom was at war with Camelot before making peace. However, the peace treaties were temporarily at stake when Bayard was accused of trying to kill Prince Arthur Pendragon by poisoning his drink. In truth, it was orchestrated by a vengeful sorceress, Nimueh, who wanted revenge against both Uther and Merlin. Knowing Merlin would be asked to drink the poisoned chalice, it nearly cost Merlin his life and peace between Camelot. Uther accused Bayard of the attempted assassination and they would would have went to war if not for the efforts of Gaius and Guinevere. Because Bayard's innocence was proven, Uther released Bayard and peace between Camelot and Mercia went ahead.
