Bato is a minor character of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is a warrior from the Southern Water Tribe and Hakoda's second in command.

History

Book 2: Earth

Bato was present with Hakoda going over a map of the Earth Kingdom when Aang dropped Sokka off. By this point, Bato was no longer wearing his bandages but red burn marks were still present on his arms. He watched as Sokka and Hakoda reunited each other for the first time in two years. However, Sokka was forced to leave again when Aang returned and told him Katara was in terrible

Book 3: Fire

After the Earth Kingdom fell, Hakoda and Bato helped Team Avatar escape the Siege of Ba Sing Se. After Aang was shot by Azula's lightning bolt, Katara managed to heal him but he spent weeks in a coma. They eventually picked up the Duke and Pipsqueak, who joined their cause to take out the Fire Nation. However, Hakoda and Sokka decided that the group should split up. While Bato and Hakoda would recruit their old friends and allies, the children would hide in the Fire Nation until they met each other at the rendezvous point. (The Awakening)

Bato later participated in the Invasion of the Black Sun when a solar eclipse occurred and cut the Firebenders from their Fire Nation. However, it was revealed that Azula knew about the Invasion. Bato and the other adults remained to be captured behind while the younger members of the rebellion fled on Appa so the children wouldn't endure the harsh imprisonments of the Fire Nation soldiers.

He was later pardoned for his war crimes by their former enemy-turned-ally, Fire Lord Zuko after he, Aang, and their friends defeated the Fire Lord once and for all.
