The Avengers are the titular protagonists of the Marvel Comics of the same name. They having appeared in many forms of media such as comic books, television series, video games, movies, etc. They are the greatest team of superheroes, whether they are humans or extraterrestrials, often said to be the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." The team was formed by Iron Man, Thor the Hulk Ant-Man and the Wasp to stop Thor's adopted brother Loki from conquering the Earth. Throughout the years, the Avengers have come together in order to defend the Earth from crime, interdimensional crises, and otherworldly threats. Their counterparts are the Justice League from DC Comics.
The team made its debut in The Avengers #1 (cover-dated Sept. 1963) created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby. The Avengers is Lee and Kirby's renovation of a previous superhero team of All-Winners Squad who appeared in comic books series published by Marvel Comics' predecessor Timely Comics. Their DC counterparts appear to be the Justice League of America (also a team of Vigilantes who operates in a similar fashion).
