- “I've made a lot of sacrifices. Made a lot of hard choices. For honor, for King, for country. Do you know what I 've learned, boy? Hard choices and sacrifices do not keep you warm at night. And life is too damn short and too damn long to go through without someone at your side. Don't end up like me. Choose the woman. Fight for love, D'Artagnan. France will take care of itself.”
- ―Athos to D'Artagnan
Athos, Comte de la Fère is the leader of the Musketeers and the deuteragonist of the 2011 adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
Athos is based on the character of the same name from The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and portrayed by Matthew Macfayden.
Background[]
Athos is a member of the king's Musketeers and friends with Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan. They own a house in Paris, living together with their manservant, Planchet, whom they all belittle. A year before meeting d'Artagnan, during a mission in Venice, Italy, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos retrieved plans of a flying battleship made by Leonardo Devinci. However, they were betrayed by Milady de Winter, who was secretly working with the Duke of Buckingham after poisoning their drinks that were enough to weaken them. Milady's betrayal brought a great deal to Athos, who was once Milady's lover. As such, the trio, though remaining together, fell from disgrace. Athos became a drunk and withdrawn from social standards.
Personality[]
According to Aramis and Porthos to D'Artagnan, Athos is cold and distant, even considering he is like that deep down. He is also untrustworthy of new people he meets, but this is mostly due to Milady betraying him and his friends in Paris. He took great offense into D'Artagnan's bold personality and only challenged him to teach him a lesson.
Athos counted mostly on his friends watching his backs, and in turn, he would do it for them as well.
When D'Artagnan was faced with Constance's death, Athos encouraged him to chose love over saving their country, showing he did not want friend to end up like him and that France would always be able to take care of itself overtime.
Physical Appearance[]
Athos is a man in his mid-to-late-thirties with shoulder-length, dark brown hair and blue eyes, as well as pale skin. He is most notably taller than the other Musketeers.
Role in the film[]
Athos was once lovers with Milady de Winter, who was once part of the Musketeers' team. He and his friends, Aramis and Porthos were fallen from disgrace after Milady betrayed the Musketeers and stole the plans of an air craft made by Leonardo da Vinci. One day while minding his own business, he was insulted by D'Artagnan of Gascony's behavior towards him and challenged him to a duel with Aramis and Porthos. Before their duel began, the captain of the Red Guards, Jussac appeared to have them arrested for illegal dueling. Instead, the four men teamed up and managed to defeat all forty men. Impressed by D'Artagnan's prowess in battle, Aramis offers to let the young man to stay in their home, Athos puts in for the time being.
