Athos, Count de la Fère (first name Olivier) is one of the titular protagonists and the deuteragonist of the 1844 novel, The Three Musketeers and its following film adaptations.

Background[]

Athos is one of the three titular Musketeers and eventually became a friend, mentor and father figure to the youngest, D'Artagnan.

He was born into a noble family and was the Count of Fere. At the age of twenty five, he fell in love with a sixteen-year-old Milady de Winter (who began by saying her name was Anne). However, one day when they were riding, Athos went to tend to her but saw that she had been branded with the fleur de lis, a marking only for those who were dubbed dangerous criminals marked for death. He had her hanged and assumed she had died. However, Milady survived the attempt on her life and began vengeance against Athos, who joined the Musketeers.

Personality[]

The Three Musketeers[]

Athos is close friends of fellow Musketeers, D'Artagnan, Aramis, and Porthos and was born the Comte de la Fere.

At the age of 25, he fell in love with a young Milady de Winter (then known as Anne) and they both married. However, when Athos learned she was a convicted criminal, he had her hanged and believed her to be dead.

Five years later, Athos was offended by the Gascony youth, D'Artagnan and challenged each other to a duel. When it came to fight, Athos found that Aramis and Porthos were offended by d'Artagnan as well. However, the trio become close friends with D'Artagnan after they all defeat Red Guards who had attempted to arrest them for illegal dueling.

Over the course of the book, Athos comes to love and become protective of d'Artagnan, whom he eventually sees as a son
