Asami Sato is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Bolin) of the animated series The Legend of Korra and the deuteragonist of the comic book series, which is focused on her and Korra's relationship. She is the best friend and eventual girlfriend of Korra and the ex-girlfriend of Mako. She is one of the three tritagonists of Book 1 (alongside Bolin and Lin Beifong), a major character in Book 2, one of the two tritagonists of Book 3, and the deuteragonists of Book 4 (alongside Bolin).

Though her father is in league with the Equalists, she recognized that his actions were wrong and chose to stand against him.

She is voiced by Seychelle Gabrielle, who previously portrayed Princess Yue from the live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender.

Appearances[]

Personality[]

Asami is an intelligent young woman and skilled businesswoman. She is best known for her kindness, care friendliness, and compassion for others. Asami's high morality and judgment prevented her from developing any prejudice against benders in general, despite the murder of her mother at the hands of a bender. In this regard, she remembered how Yasuko herself had never shown any resentment toward benders.

Despite Korra having romantic feelings for Mako, Asami's boyfriend at the time, Asami showed no ill-will towards Korra. After learning that Korra and Mako kissed, Asami was more angry towards her "boyfriend" for not telling her. She was also angry with Mako when he didn't tell Korra that they had broken up before she left Republic City. Assami was hurt in betrayed when she found out her father was secretly aligned with the non-bending Equalists who were targeting benders and stripping them of their bending.

In the three-year time jump, Asami put some distance between herself to focus more on her company as Korra recovered from her poisoning by the Red Lotus, Bolin joined Kuvira's army, and Mako because a bodyguard for Prince Wu. She couldn't get Korra off her mind and was embittered toward the Avatar when she ceased contact with her and snapped at Korra for assuming that Hiroshi was attempting to brainwash her. She finally recovered with Korra after saving Prince Wu. At first, terrified of her and Korra revealing their relationship, Asami grew accustomed to her bisexuality, up to the point where she was comfortable sharing a bed with her girlfriend.

Asami's dedication and protectiveness of her girlfriend and teammates are at their strongest, as she threatens Kuvira in Turf Wars if the older woman one day betrays Korra. Also in most of his appearances, he usually gives off a stoic demeanor.

Physical Appearance[]

Asami Sato is a young woman with black hair, pale green great eyes, and fair skin. Her hair is mostly long and at times, Asami wears it in a hair tie throughout most of Book 4. As a native with a Fire Nation background, she had most of the characteristics of Fire Nation citizens, as that culture typically has citizens with black or dark brown hair. However, instead of having standard eye colors, Asami's was green, hinting at her possibly having Earth Kingdom heritage. She is also quite beautiful, considering how Mako was mesmerized by her when he first met her, and how Korra was jealous and later attracted to her. When Mako's grandmother met Korra and Asami, she added that Korra was muscular and Asami was beautiful but also commented that both girls were quite lovely and asked why he wasn't getting any of those girls. When she was with her father, Korra wore rich clothing, with a dress, a black button sweater, and red gloves.

Her wardrobe mostly consists of red and black colors due to her Fire Nation heritage. According to Greenman's article on Asami: "However, Asami Sato’s outfits generally come in only two flavors: baggy engineers uniforms and subtly stylish business attire. Both are excellent at conveying what her character is about. Asami is the group’s resident engineer, able to manipulate electrical devices and build contraptions under pressure. She is also an avid racer and pilot, both requiring protection. Her engineering get-up covers her entire body and provides additional padding, showcasing that she is no fool.  When she is meeting with dignitaries and potential business clients, Asami wears skirts with short jackets on top. They are very subtly red, even maroon, to indicate her Fire Nation heritage."[1]

When out in action, Asami wears a dark red/black baggy workman coat, brown gloves, dark red trousers, and red boots with gold trimmings. In  Book One, she wears a dark red tunic with puffed sleeves. However, the cuffs of her shirt reach towards her elbow, where it meets with the puffed sleeves. She wears a black belt on her dark red shirt and a black skirt and boots, as well as grey-red tights and a black mini-cape. Her mini-cape and skirt are both black and bound together with golden buttons. When in the winter or visiting cold spaces, she wears a dirty pink winter coat and dress, with black boots and white fur linings on her collar and cuffs.

Powers and abilities[]

Asami is a skilled engineer, pilot, and driver, and a competent unarmed combatant. Since she cannot bend elements like her friends, Asami wears special gloves that generate electricity. To make up for her taking the back seat at times, the team who created the legend of Korra do whatever they can to highlight Asami's ingenuity. She is also a skilled businesswoman, even inventing flight suits for the Air Nomads by combining their clothing with glider designs.

Relationships[]

Korra[]

Korassami kiss comics

Korra and Asami's first kiss.

In addition to being her best friend and teammate, Korra eventually became Asami's girlfriend and is arguably the love of her life.

However, back when Korra and Asami were both after Mako, there was a lot of love-triangle drama between them, deterring a lot of essential connection and communication. Korra (who initially had a crush on Mako when they met) was initially jealous of Asami because of her crush on  Mako at the time. Korra when tried to sabotage their relationship until she realized it was wrong of her to do that. Korra and Mako later kissed unknowingly in front of Bolin, who was trying to approach Korra with flowers and chocolates due to his crush on her. Bolin later told Asami what happened.  During Korra's disappearance, Asami watched as Mako worried about Korra when she was missing and was informed by Bolin that Korra and Mako kissed each other. However, Asami didn't hold it against Korra because she valued her. After Asami and Mako broke up, he and Korra started dating.

However, Korra and Asami eventually began a romantic relationship, with implications brought out throughout all season 4 and finally confirmed in the follow-up comics. They eventually came out to the rest of their friends, much to the happiness of Jinora, Opal, Bolin, and Mako.

Mako[]

Ex and Best Friend

Asami first met Mako when she hit him with her motorcycle. Though angry at first, Mako was amazed by how beautiful Asami was that he stopped telling her off. Soon, the two started dating. However, a love triangle grew between Asami, Korra and Mako. At one point, Korra kissed Mako outside of the pro-bending arena, unknowingly in front of Bolin. After Korra's disappearance, Asami accused Mako of being in love with Korra. Instead of being the stereotypical girlfriend who hates the girl who has a crush on her boyfriend, Asami is mad at him instead of Korra.  She confronted him for his obvious feelings for Korra and about their kiss (which Bolin told Asami earlier) and snapped that there probably wasn't going to be a relationship they would have to worry about. By the end of Book 1, Asami and Mako broke up and he started dating Korra immediately after.

However, after Makorra broke up, Asami and Mako temporarily reignited their relationship due to the pressures of Team Avatar slowly breaking apart and the aftermath of the Equalists. When Bolin found out, he reprimanded Mako and Asami for this happening only just after Mako and Korra broke up.

In a twist of Irony, Asami and Korra started dating and Mako was nothing but supportive of his friends' relationship.

Bolin[]

Asami Sato and Bolin

Bolin is one of Asami's best friends, and they both met through Bolin's brother Mako. Mako was dating Asami at the time. Bolin was thrilled when Asami convinced her father Hiroshi to sponsor the Fire Ferrets. After the attack on the pro-bending arena, Asami allowed Bolin and Mako to live with her. When Korra was kidnapped and Asami was worried that Mako had feelings for Korra, Bolin tried to assure her that there was nothing between them, but accidentally told her about the kiss.

In the final battle for Republic City, Bolin, and Asami were in the same group as General Iroh. Asami's father, Hiroshi, had been exposed as an Equalist. In Book 2, Bolin and Asami remained good friends even though was Mako no longer dating. However, Bolin eventually found out that Mako and Asami got together just after Korra broke up with Mako and was mad at his brother and friend for this action.

In the comics, Bolin was very supportive of Korra and Asami's relationship even asking if they would be interested in a double date with him and Opal.

Varrick[]

Varrick has been Asami's ally, business partner, enemy and eventually became a friend of hers. In Book 4, Asami attended Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding.

Trivia[]

  • Asami Sato is one of the first openly bisexual characters in the Avatar franchise, along with her girlfriend Korra and Kyoshi.
    • Ironically Kyoshi was in a relationship with a girl from the Fire Nation. One was a Non-bender from the Fire Nation (Ragni and Asami, who has Fire Nation heritage) and one was the Avatar, Master of All Four Elements (Korra and Kyoshi). Ironically both Korra and Kyoshi start with a K.
  • Asami threatening to kill Kuvira if she did anything to Korra in the comics mirrors how Katara threatened to kill Zuko if he ever harmed Aang in "The Western Air Temple." Another similarity between Kataang and Korrasami is they are an interracial relationship and each didn't get together until the finales.
  • Asami is from Republic City, but confirmed to have Fire Nation ethnic background. It is also possible that Asami may have Earth Kingdom background because her eyes are green, a trait generally found in the Earth Kingdom instead of the Fire Nation.
