Artemis was born on the floating island of Delos after Hera cursed her mother from never giving birth on anything bound to the Earth. She was the first one born and helped her mother give birth to Apollo, making the goddess so affected by it, she did not ever want to become a mother. She approached her father, Lord Zeus and asked to remain a Virgin, along with a company of eighty eternally young maidens as her companions, bows and arrows forged by the cyclopes and a pack of dogs. Zeus loved her adventurous spirit and granted his daughter her wishes.
For the past centuries, Artemis began recruiting young girls
before they reached their majority and before they were ever fixated on boys. Among the recruits was Zoe Nightshade, a former member of the Hesperides and a
daughter of Atlas.
Though she swore to become a virgin, the only man she ever fell in love with was Orion. However, she soon cut him off from becoming part of the Hunters.
