Ares (Roman equivalent Mars ) is the Greek god of war and courage. He is one of the Twelve Olympians, and the son of Zeus and Hera. The Greeks were generally ambivalent towards him. Ares was never very popular, and his worship was not extensive in Greece except in Sparta.
