- “If you sail the seven seas!
In gondola or catamaran!
And you find yourself in trouble!
Please call on Aquaman!” - ―Aquaman.
- “By Neptune's trident!”
- ―One of Aquaman's frequent marks of surprise.
- “Is that what you want? A hero to bring down Rath? Not a king to rule in his place? I won't be a king again, Dolphin. But if the rest is enough for you and for Atlantis...then you have Aquaman!”
- ―Aquaman to Dolphin.
Aquaman (real name: Arthur Curry; Atlantean name: Orin) is one of the main protagonists of the DC Universe, serving as the titular protagonist of the Aquaman comic books and one of the protagonists of the Justice League comic books.
He is an adventurer who is half-human and half-Atlantean. He is able to walk on land and live within the oceans. It is notable that Aquaman has been a member of the Justice League and the former King of Atlantis.
Fictional History
Publication History
Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, the character debuted in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941). Initially a backup feature in DC's anthology titles, Aquaman later starred in several volumes of a solo comic book series.
During the late 1950s and 1960s superhero-revival period known as the Silver Age, he was a founding member of the Justice League. In the 1990s Modern Age, writers interpreted Aquaman's character more seriously, with storylines depicting the weight of his role as king of Atlantis.
Upon cancellation of Aquaman vol. 8, Aquaman did not have a self-titled release until a digital only series titled Aquaman: Deep Dives released in 2020. Throughout 2022 Aquaman appeared in both Aquaman: The Becoming, and Aquamen which saw Aquaman train Jackson Hyde/Aqualad to take over his mantle. However, by the end of 2022, it seemed DC was moving away from this decision as they began publishing regular Aquaman team-up stories again.
Personality
Aquaman is usually portrayed as a selfless individual who cares for both the Atlanteans and the surface-dwellers. He also has a special connection with the ocean due to his Atlantean physiology and seems to connect with oceanic life since his childhood. However, like all Hybrids, Aquaman faces prejudice from others just for being half-human. Despite this, he has eventually won the heart of the people once they learned he was the true King of Atlantis. But this doesn't stop them from exiling him once in a while. He also has close friendships with his teammates on the Justice League, more specifically with J'onn J'onzz, who he has teamed up with on multiple occasions.
His one true love, however, is Mera, the Princess of Xebel and his love interest. Initially an assassin sent to kill Arthur, the two ultimately fell in love and later married. The tragic death of their son, Aquababy caused them to have a falling out until Aquaman's death. However, after his resurrection in Blackest Night, Mera and Arthur are once again happy.
