~ Aang in "The Puppetmaster"

Aang, also known as the Last Airbender, is the titular main protagonist of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series and The Legends of Korra. In the comics, Aang is one of the two protagonists of The Promise (alongside Zuko), the deuteragonist of The Search, one of the two protagonists of The Rift (alongside Toph Beifong), the tritagonist of Smoke and Shadow and a major character in North and South.

He is the last Airbender who wants to Master all four elements and defeat the evil Fire Lord Ozai while bringing balance to the world. Aang later began a romantic relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Katara. They ultimately ended up marrying her and having three children with her, Bumi, Kya and Tenzin, a daughter-in-law Pema, and four grandchildren, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo and Rohan. Posthumously, he was eventually succeeded by Korra, a young Waterbender, as the next Avatar. He was also the brother-in-law of Sokka, the owner of Flying Bison, Appa, and Momo, and the former rival turned best friend of Fire Lord Zuko.

He is voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen, who also voiced Lucas Nickle in The Ant Bully and Pablo in the first season of The Backyardigans.

In The Legend of Korra, he is voiced by D.B. Sweeney who also voiced Tom Cat in Hanna-Barbera, Aladar in Dinosaur and Sitka in Brother Bear.

Early History[]

Aang was born to unnamed parents. After selecting the Avatar relics from among thousands of toys, thereby inadvertently confirming his identity as the Avatar, he was taken from his parents and raised by the monks without ever knowing he was the Avatar.

Avatar: The Last Airbender[]

Book One: Water[]

As the Fire Nation army advances onto Anga Qel'a, Aang grows frustrated at his inability to help the North out and what the Fire Nation is planning. Yue takes Aang and Katara to the Spirit Oasis so Aang can meditate, connect and enter the Spirit World. However, he is distracted by Katara and Yue's talking and snaps at them to be quiet. As Aang looks to the middle of the pond, he sees two koi fish swimming around in a circle. As Aang looks at the two fish, he watches them transform into a yin/yang symbol and successfully enters the spirit world. However, during the time that Aang is unconscious, Zuko breaks into the Spirit Oasis and kidnaps Aang after defeating Katara.

The Legend of Korra[]

Book 1: Air[]

When Korra moved out of Wolf Cove and to Republic City, she slipped in and out of consciousness. During those times, she sometimes suffered from visions of Aang's past encounter with Yakone. It was heavily implied that Aang was attempting to warn Korra about Yakone's sons Tarrlok and later Amon.

Aang later appears before his successor Korra, where he congratulates her for finally connecting to her spiritual side. With their predecessors lining up behind them, Aang restored Katara's bending and later taught Korra how to use energy as well. This gave her the ability to restore other people's bending.

However, Korra's connection to her past lives was destroyed by Unalaq breaking her connection to Raava for a while. Aang was the first connection to Korra to be broken, followed by Sozin, Kyoshi, Yangchen, and back by Wan.

Book 2: Spirits[]

Later, during Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi's travels into the Spirit world looking for Jinora's spirit, they got lost in the Fog of Lost Souls. There, Tenzin sees the spirit of his father in a vision. The older Aang tells Tenzin that he never wanted his son to be a version of him and instead wanted Tenzin to take his path and be his person. He also wanted Tenzin to rebuild the Air Nomads with his siblings as well before they later vanished. Aang's image transformed into an image of Tenzin, and his son finally stepped out of his father's shadow.

Personality[]

Aang is usually portrayed as energetic, pacifistic, optimistic, and cheerful. He also has an adventurous spirit. As an Air Nomad, Aang thought it was against his nature to resort to physical violence, only resorting to non-lethal attacks and methods. He possessed deep respect for life and freedom, refused to eat meat, and was often reluctant to fight in his younger years. He craved the stimulation of new people and places. His frequent off-course detours frustrated both allies and pursuers alike. He also tended to become distressed when he saw the destruction caused by the Hundred Year War, believing that as the Avatar, it was his job to prevent such events from happening. Eventually, Aang decided to stop dwelling on the past; however, on several occasions, his desire to end the War caused him to take desperate action such as attempting to induce the Avatar State or facing Fire Lord Ozai before he had fully mastered the elements.

Deep down, Aang felt extreme guilt and remorse for abandoning his duties as the Avatar. This especially deepened when Aang failed to save Ba Sing Se, leaving him visibly shaken and unconfident until Roku and Princess Yue's spirits encouraged him to not give up. In the first season, Aang got tired of Zuko chasing him around the world as well as putting people's lives in danger (such as the Kyoshi Warriors). However, Aang did incidentally save Zuko's life twice. During Zuko's chase of the Avatar, Aang usually managed to outwit his enemies with his bantering. He was also initially terrible at flirt, even asking Sokka for advice on the girls. However, Sokka's plan to "ignore the girl until they are interested" didn't seem to work. He attempted to flirt with Katara, whom Aang loved since the moment he saw her. However, she remained oblivious to the subtle hints Aang was trying to give her until Sokka mentioned that Aang was a powerful bender.

However, he wasn't above losing his temper, such as yelling at Toph for not caring about Appa when he was taken by the Sandbenders. As such Aang would usually activate the Avatar State whenever he was sad[1] or angered[2]. In Appa's disappearance, Aang started to pull out his grief and sadness of Appa being taken out on his friends and accusing them of not caring that Appa was gone. However, he was given a chance to properly grieve when Katara brought him out of the Avatar state. However, he was given a chance to properly grieve when Katara brought him out of the Avatar state. Despite this, the sight of a newborn baby gave him newfound hope, which contributed to him reverting to his old self while becoming more mature than he was before.

In Book 3, Aang got frustrated with his friends for insisting that he kill the Fire Lord, even though it went against everything he stood for. However, he took a third option by taking away the Fire Lord's bending.

Physical appearance[]

Aang is a twelve (later thirteen)[3]-year-old boy with grey eyes, fair skin, and brown hair. At age 12, he earned his airbending master tattoos, which are bluish-grey and run down his chakra points. While he mostly shaves his hair, Aang lets it grow out for the first half of Season 3 to keep the guise that he was killed in Ba Sing Se. However, some people such as Azula and Zuko still suspected he somehow survived. However, he later sports a beard in later life. During the series run, Aang was the shortest member of Team Avatar, reaching only Zuko's shoulder. As a young adult, however, Aang was the tallest member of Team Avatar.

Abilities[]

As the Avatar, Aang is the master of all four Elements, Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. He learned more skills from Toph Beifong (in Earthbending), Katara and Pakku (in water bending), and Zuko (in Firebending)

Bending[]

Airbending[]

Aang Airbending

Airbending is Aang's primary and native bending style. Having been taught at a young age, Aang attained his airbending master tattoos at the age of twelve, being the second youngest Airbenders to do so after his granddaughter Jinora, who was only eleven. Aang primarily uses air blasts as a form of attack when fighting his firebending foes, as seen in his fights with Zuko and blowing Zhao from across the room when he held him captive at the Stronghold. These attacks can also cancel out his opponent's incoming fire. He also used them to put out fires and incoming blasts, coming from the Fire Nation warships.

Aang creating an air construct

Aang can also create crescent wind currents to redirect offensive attacks, deflecting colossal projectiles, such as Aang using this technique against Princess Azula in the failed invasion of the Fire Nation. He can manipulate wind currents with his glider, which allows him to fly. He can assist create air constructs, generate whirlwinds and tornadoes (via Aang wielding this maneuver on the offensive against Combustion Man at the Western Air Temple), and levitate off the ground, especially during the Avatar State or when he is standing up. He can manipulate the clouds, which Aang does in "The Fortuneteller" to save a town when its citizens listen to Aunt Wu's predictions over Team Avatar's warning That the volcano is going to erupt. Airbending also enhances his agility and reflexes, allowing him to have an advantage over fighting.

Waterbending[]

Though Aang was initially better at waterbending than Katara, eventually surpassed him. Despite being the Avatar, Aang never carried around a water skin like Katara does and instead Benz from large water sources such as lakes, oceans, and streams. He could also control ice and snow, which he used to transform into a snowman before using the air to brush it off of him. When he was in the Avatar State he could bend the ocean's waters to his will, such as creating a sphere of water around him and Appa and turning it to ice. During the Siege of the North, he merged with the ocean spirit, La, and unleashed godlike waterbending by creating Koizilla. However, after Princess Yue revived the moon spirit, Tui, La released Aang from his hold on the young Avatar. He was able to extinguish a powerful comet-enhanced blast of fire from Ozai and briefly put the Fire Lord on the defensive using the water. After his triumphant battle with Fire Lord Ozai, Aang used waterbending to make the waters rise above ground level and put out the fires.

Earthbending[]

Because earthbending contrasted Aang's personality and his native element, air, he had great difficulty learning the bending art. Airbenders relied on indirect methods of combat while earthbending required a head-on approach. When Aang was forced to protect Sokka from a saber-tooth moose lion, he stood his ground rather than avoiding conflict, showing an earth bender's attitude he was able to earthbend soon thereafter. His earthbending improved greatly, allowing him to utilize air, water, and earthbending in combat together effectively. Earthbending even became Aang's second most used fighting style behind airbending due to its general availability and defensive capabilities. Aang was capable of bending large boulders, sending massive columns of rock flying, or forming earthen armor around his body for protection. He also eventually learned to fight and bend blindfolded by detecting things through the use of seismic sense, a skill that he learned directly from Toph.

Firebending[]

Aang has the opportunity to learn firebending early from Master Jeong Jeong. However, his impatience to learn the basics of firebending caused him to accidentally burn Katara's hands. He swore to never firebend again but after the failure of the Black Sun invasion, Aang wanted to learn firebending again. A reformed Zuko offered to teach Aang but the young boy refused due to the Prince's previous actions against team Avatar, his betrayal at Ba Sing Se, and sending an assassin, Combustion Man after them. They were more unwilling to let Zuko teach Aang after Zuko accidentally burned Toph's feet when she snuck up on him. However, Aang and the team changed their minds when Zuko protected Aang and Team Avatar from Combustion Man. However, during their lessons, Zuko initially struggled to mentor Aang on firebending since Zuko joined the group after losing his anger, which fueled his firebending during his attempts to hunt the Avatar. The boys later learned the true meaning of firebending from the Dragons, the original source, even though fire can be destructive, it can also create light. After visiting the Sun Warriors, Aang got over his fear since he burned Katara. However, Zuko was still a strict teacher towards Aang on occasion, sometimes pushing him to the limit and not allowing him to have any breaks until he finished his exercises. He also did this by later attacking the young Airbender around the Fire Lord's estate. During the Battle of Sozin's Comet, Aang used a combination of fire and water to nearly take the Fire Lord out and he instead opted to take away Ozai's bending.

Lightning Redirection[]

As part of his firebending training, Zuko, like his uncle once taught him, showed Aang how to redirect lightning. As he explained it, Aang realized it was a waterbending technique instead of a Firebending one. It proved useful during Aang'a and Ozai's duel; when the Fire Lord turned Phoenix king fired at Aang, the boy successfully redirected the lighting and turned it against Ozai.

Energybending[]

Aang restores Korra

Aang restores his successor Korra's bending.

  • The ancient ability to bend the energy of another. After being endowed with power from the lion turtle, Aang mastered Energy Bending. He needs to be in the Avatar State to do this.** Power Stripping: Aang used Energybending to strip Fire Lord Ozai of his destructive firebending as an alternative to killing his enemy. This left the Fire Lord permanently drained and in a weakened state. He later stripped Yakone of his bending abilities.
    • Power Restoration: He can also restore a person's bending, as he did with Korra after her bending abilities were taken from Amon's bloodbending.
    • Knowledge Transference: Aang also learned to transfer knowledge from one person to another, which is what he did with Korra by transferring the knowledge of energybending in the Avatar State into her as well.

Avatar State[]

As the Avatar, Aang was able to contact his past lives seeking their advice and counsel due to being the living incarnation of Raava. He frequently talked to Roku, who was his previous incarnation. Roku warned him about the impending return of Sozin's Comet and helped him defeat Admiral Zhou and his firebender soldiers. After receiving a letter from Guru Pathik, Aang journeyed to the Eastern Air Temple to learn to control the Avatar State. However, Aang couldn't complete it because he refused to let go of his love for Katara. In Ba Sing Se, Aang's connection to his previous lives was severely damaged by Azula shooting him in the back with lightning and, while in a coma, he undertook a journey to the Spirit World, where he met and reconnected with the four Avatars preceding him. He also encountered his fallen friend Princess Yue, who helped guide him through the spirit world during his coma. 70 years later, Korra lost the ability to connect to her past lives and let the Avatar State be reborn, with her even fearing that her successor wouldn't be able to contact her like she couldn't do with Aang.

Mediumship[]

As the carrier of the Avatar Spirit, Aang also could act as a bridge between the mortal world and the Spirit World. In "The Winter Solstice, Part I," Aang contacted Hei Bai the nature spirit, and could tell that the spirit was hurt due to the destruction that the Fire Nation inflicted on their first. He later used his affinity with spirits to connect with the forest spirit and calm him down, restoring Heibai to his panda form. He combined with the Ocean Spirit to defeat the Fire Nation during the siege of the North Pole and also channeled his past lives, namely Roku and Kyoshi. Even while still a young child, Aang demonstrated a natural affinity to the spiritual arts. His granddaughter, Jinora also shares her grandfather's connection and affinity for spirits, even becoming her grandfather's reincarnation Korra's spiritual guide. He could also see spirits when they chose to show themselves. After Korra's defeat of her uncle, she and her future Avatar were no longer the bridge between the two worlds but could still have an affinity with the Spirits no matter what.

Agility[]

Chi Sensing[]

Using his chakra with the roots around him, Aang eventually became deeply connected to other individuals and located them. He used this ability to find Appa and Momo in the Foggy Swamp.
