Familial[]
Katara[]

Best Friend/Family
Before the two formally met, Katara felt some form of connection towards Aang after she and Sokka freed him from the iceberg he was trapped in for the past 100 years. They took him back to her village, where Kanna healed him and identified him as an Airbender after inspecting his tattoos. During their adventures, it was often Aang who helped Katara believe in herself when it came to bending. Katara was also the only one willing to do anything to help Aang, even convincing Sokka that Aang is the only one who, as the Avatar, can defeat the Fire Lord and end the Hundred Year War. She and Sokka saved him from Zuko after he surrendered himself to the Fire Nation and Katara comforted him when he discovered Gyatso's skeleton. Katara repeated this action later when she and Aang came across a section of the forest that had been burned by Fire Nation troops. Demonstrating her knowledge, Katara presented Aang with an acorn and explained how it could be used to rejuvenate the damaged woodland, as her grandmother had taught her that life follows a natural cycle and will always find a way to be born again. As the series progressed, Katara and Sokka came to consider Aang as a good friend of theirs, even considering themselves as Aang's secondary family.
In "The North," Aang told Katara he was glad that she was with him. During his encounter with Kuruk, the former Avatar tried discouraging Aang from involving anyone else because there is no Team Avatar and that it is the path of the Avatar was the one they had to walk alone. Because of this, Aang feared Katara and Sokka could get hurt. Meanwhile Katara found out that the Northern Water Tribe doesn't allow women to fight and only limits them to healing with water bending. She found Aang and told him that Pakku refused to let her fight because she is a woman. Taking Kuruk's advice to heart, Aang told Katara that he wouldn't let her or Sokka could get hurt and didn't want her Fighting either. After being told she couldn't fight by Yagoda and Pakku, Katara was hurt by her best friend's lack of support and this was one of the reasons she decided to engage Pakku in a duel. However, Katara told Aang that it was her decision to fight and not his or Pakku's. Katara also knew that Aang wanted to protect her and Sokka but she and her brother convinced Aang that they were not leaving him because staying together is what it means to be a family.
Katara also reached Aang when the Ocean Spirit possessed him, La, and convinced him to not leave the world because they were his family. After the Siege of the North, Aang expressed guilt and remorse for not preventing death and destruction. However, Katara and Sokka convinced him that everything was not his fault.
Unlike the cartoons, Katara and Aang's relationship is strictly platonic.
Sokka[]

Sokka initially thought Aang to be a danger and a threat to his family and friends, even willing to abandon him to the Fire Nation and his quest alone. They still saved each other, ironically from Zuko both times. Despite Aang trying to be friendly and seeing Aang cry granted him some of Sokka's empathy towards him, Sokka still was dismissive of Aang. Eventually, the boys became good friends since their adventure on Kyoshi Island with Sokka deeming Zuko to be a danger to Aang and Katara. Sokka promised that he and Katara are going to help them with his quest. Since their adventure started, Sokka watches after both Aang and Katara as the eldest of the three. The trio has their true first disagreement when Aang and Sokka disbelieve Katara's claims that Sai, the mechanist, is the traitor and Jet is a savior. However Aang stays out of their fight, unsure what to say to them as tension rises.
In "The North," Sokka and Aang have been able to understand and communicate with each other without exchanging words. When Katara is fighting Pakku, Aang tried to interfere but stops and nods when he gives Aang an intense look that clearly tells him this is Katara's fight and Aang backs off. He also chastised Aang when he said he needed to protect the North alone. However, Sokka and Katara both convince him to go the other away and decide to let him and Katara help in the good fight.
In Legends, Aang, Sokka and Katara worked together to take out some of the Fire Nation Armada ships but find themselves an impasse when it is a lot more than they bargain for. After being warned by Kuruk's Spirit that Zhao intended to look the Moon Spirit, Aang insisted to Katara that they needed to find Yue and Sokka but he got to the couple too late. Despite their efforts to save them moon spirit, Zhao still succeeded in killing her. After this, Sokka looks at Aang with sympathy when the latter agrees that he unimportant by Admiral Zhao and when Aang merged with the Ocean Spirit. After Yue's sacrifice, Aang is turned to normal but guilt-ridden for being the cause of the North's loss. By the end of the first season, Sokka and Aang are a family, with the latter helping Katara tease Sokka and for him to tease the younger boy back. Sokka also addresses Aang as "kid."
Appa[]
Gyatso[]
Friends[]
Bumi[]

Bumi is one of Aang's best friends from childhood. He and Gyatso often visited Omashu and the Fire Nation before the war started. In Into the Dark, it is revealed that Bumi was the one who crafted Aang's sky bison whistle that he uses to call Appa when they're separated. The two used to be inseparable, with Aang finding Omashu as one of the greatest In the one hundred years Aang was gone, Bumi became the King of Omashu while growing angry at Aang for abandoning the world. (somehow knowing he was the Avatar) grew cold and embittered. Before realizing that Bumi was still alive, Aang reminisced on their past friendship when he was imprisoned before being interrupted by Iroh.
When the guards took him to see the King, Aang eventually figured out that the King of Omashu was his childhood friend when Bumi heard his familiar snort. Even though Aang was happy to see Bumi, his old friend was not disappointed that Aang ran without realizing that he never meant to. While being the Earth King's prisoner, Aang got agitated by Bumi's cynical attitude and putting him through ridiculous tests and tried calling him out on it. During their duel, Bumi revealed his hatred towards Aang, blaming him for the war and the suffering of his people. He starts forcing Aang into "proving himself" through tests that seem like "games." To Bumi but he is punishing Aang for abandoning him. To prove he'll make difficult choices facing the Fire Lord, Bumi Earthbends two boulders and Aang is forced to levitate them in the air. He is given two options: save himself from being crushed by a rock, or save Bumi. However, they are both saved by Katara and Sokka's timely intervention. Aang smiled and told Bumi that they could count on their friends after all. Aang takes out the rock Bumi forged for him hidden in his shirt. With hope restored, Bumi and Aang were able to make amends with each other. Finally realizing what was at stake, Bumi told Aang he and the kingdom were going to rejoin the war and take care of themselves. Before Team Avatar left Omashu, Bumi insisted that he and Aang do one more challenge together: riding with the cart down the mailing system.
After the war in Anga Qel'a was over Aang intended to have Bumi become his Earthbending teacher.
Kuzon[]
Kuzon was one of Aang's best friends from the Fire Nation before the Hundred Year War. When Aang tried bonding with Zuko, he fondly remembered Kuzon even years after his disappearance.
Teo[]

When Team Avatar was traveling north, Aang saw someone flying in the air and heading towards the city Omashu and flew Appa and the Team to the Great City. To get to the city, the Team Avatar disguised themselves as Earth Kingdom civilians and got Jet to smuggle them inside. When he saw Teo again, Aang ran off with Sokka and Katara chasing after him. In all of Aang's excitement, he was disappointed when he saw that the "Airbender" was just Teo, a boy who could glide in the air with his wheelchair. He just chuckled at the other boy's assumption but turned to shock and amazement when he saw Aang use his airbending to put out a fire cannonball. The team thought about leaving Omashu but after seeing the damage and destruction as well as all the people who were injured from the fireball attack, Aang revealed to Teo and his father Sai that he was the Avatar and he was going to help them. To Aang, he needs to help people like Teo and his dad despite the urgency to get to the North.
Having grown up with his mother's stories about the Avatar returning, Teo regained hope. Teo even suggested to Aang they could fly up to the mountain and investigate where the bombings take place, In their short time together, Teo and Aang bonded on their way over to the mountains, even laughing as they glided through the air. Teo also confided in Aang about his past and how he wished his father could do more. As the boys walked through the caves, they discovered blasting jelly hidden inside and quickly went back home. After learning his father was building weapons for the Fire Nation, Teo showed he was disappointed by Sai's actions. When they heard Aang was imprisoned, Teo insisted to his father that they needed to help Sokka and Katara sneak to the secret tunnels in Omashu so they could rescue Aang, who was being held captive in the palace by Bumi.
Despite being in different elements, both Aang and Teo's cheerful personalities complement them both and it's worth noting that Teo was the first person Aang could connect to at his age. Even though Teo is not an Airbender, Aang secretly thinks that he has the heart of one. They were also both victims of the Fire Nation who found common ground in the loss of a parental figure, Teo's mother, and Aang's father figure, Gyatso.
Yue[]

Aang and Yue
Unlike her father and Master Pakku, Yue was never condensating or dismissive towards Aang when he admitted to having no experience with waterbending.
While Yue did have her doubts that Aang could make a spiritual connection with Kuruk because of his past life's poor reputation of ignoring all of the Four Nations, she still helped him get to Kuruk's shrine. Sokka and Yue looked at Aang and Sokka asked the younger boy if he was successful in his conversation with Avatar Kuruk.
During the siege of the Norht, Aang told his friends that Zhao intended to kill both the ocean and moon spirits much to Yue's horror. However, Yue passes out from the lack of the Moon.
After being revived, Yue told Sokka that Aang is gone because La is a vengeful spirit who will roam endlessly looking for its partner but will never find it. Yue tells Sokka that she is the only one who can bring the Moon back and save Aang since she was touched by the Moon Spirit as a child. She sacrifices her life force to revive Tui, become the new Moon spirit, and restore the waterbender's abilities, the Moon and Aang back to normal. After the battle, Aang felt somewhat responsible for some of the Waterbenders' deaths, including Yue, since she gave her life force to save him and restore the Moon.
Enemies[]
Zuko[]

For three years, Zuko, since the age of 14, was tasked with the impossible task of capturing the Avatar. However, hope returned when Avatar Aang was freed from an iceberg he was trapped in for 100 years. When Zuko tracked him at Wolf Cove and on the verge of killing the Water Tribe boy, Sokka, Aang quickly surrendered when Zuko threatened to have Wolf Cove burn to the ground. However, Aang escaped, stole Zuko's journal on Avatars and was shortly rescued by Sokka, Appa and Katara. During their next encounters on Kyoshi Island and Omashu, Zuko tried and then failed to capture Team Avatar due to his arrogance and hot temper getting in the way.
During the chase, Aang got agitated or annoyed that Zuko was determined to capture him, even criticizing him for getting himself and Iroh arrested. However the more he read Zuko's journal, the more Aang felt less alone in the world. When Zuko did have Aang in his grasps because of June, he quickly lost Aang to Admiral Zhao, who imprisoned the Avatar inside Pohuai Stronghold. Zuko (as the Blue Spirit) came to rescue Aang, who seemed genuinely surprised to being saved. Though the two fought together, Aang was signed to see that the person behind the mask was Prince Zuko. They later bonded over their responsibilities that they were given and the roles they play but this morning was very short lived. Even though they were enemies, a part of Aang sympathized with Zuko, especially after he accidentally knocked him out and Aang profoundly apologized, as he could see Zuko had been hurt more than enough. After Aang returned to the Spirit world and saved Sokka and Katara, he told his friends that he now understands that he and Zuko aren't so different after all.
During the Siege of the North, Zuko stopped Aang and Katara from getting to the spirit Oasis, revealing he came to take Aang away by force instead of giving him a choice like he did at Wolf Cove but Katara stayed behind to fight Zuko off. After Zhao killed the Moon Spirit, Zuko watched in despair when he realized that the Avatar was lost after Aang connected with the ocean spirit La. Instead he turned his fury towards Admiral Zhao and Zuko fought him in a duel. However the Admiral mocked the prince and revealed that Zuko's quest to capture the Avatar with just a ruse; instead it was just a ploy to motivate Azula on her own path to becoming her father's heir.
Azula[]
When word of the Avatar had been discovered by none other than her own brother, Azula used Zuko's determination to capture Aang to her advantage. When Iron and Zuko fail, she takes it upon herself to hunt Team Avatar.
Even though Azula and Aang have not officially met at this point, she would go on to become one of the team avatars' greatest enemies. Azula and Aang have little in common, but it is unknown that they were child prodigies of bending from a young age.
Ozai[]
Ozai wasted no time sending others to hunt down and kill the Avatar, the only person capable of defeating him and putting a stop to his threats. He gave Zuko the impossible task of hunting down the Avatar and banished him from the Fire Nation. Aang hasn't met the Fire Lord yet but the young Avatar is disgusted by how Ozai continues to wage war on the other Nations and hurt civilians such as Theo and Sai. He learned more about the Fire Lord through Iroh. Due to his hatred towards Zuko hunting him down, Aang is confused as to why Zuko wants to "son the war for [his] dad. Aang learned about Zuko's banishment from his journal but didn't know the details.
In Masks, Zuko tells Aang that bringing him to the Fire Nation is the only way his father will restore him to the throne. However, the Avatar doesn't have all the details of Zuko's banishment or the fact that Ozai was the one who burned his son. After accidentally knocking Zuko out cold, Aang apologized to the older boy and could sense that he was hurt more than enough.
